New owners... and I love the new food!
I'd easily rate Tanaka's 4.5 out of 5 stars overall! Highly recommended!
Here are my thoughts and experience details with Tanaka's:
I live right near Tanaka's and tried it when they first opened a few years ago, under their old ownership... I was not happy. It wasn't so bad that it made me sick or anything, but it just did not have any flavor... at all. I would purposefully drive past it and go farther down the street to Toyama's, Sushi 101 or Ishi's (note: Toyama's was my favorite for Hibachi/Teriyaki meals and Sushi 101 was my favorite for affordable sushi? but now I get them both from Tanaka?s).
Tanaka's has new owners now and they are doing it right, starting with the food. The restaurant is still pretty basic. I would not consider the atmosphere to be ""fine dining"" but the food is now amazing and the restaurant is always very clean. I would have no problem bringing a date or my family here. I've tried almost everything on the menu and have not had a bad meal yet. And everything is pretty affordable, even on the smallest budget. The hibachi/teriyaki meals are priced similarly to Toyama's and Ishi's, and based on the last time I went for Sushi, Tanaka's is slightly less expensive than Sushi 101.
On a side note? I recommend trying the Hibachi Bowl. I have them add extra veggies and mushrooms, but it is probably my favorite thing on the menu. And when they say it can feed two, it really means it can feed two a few times. I normally split it into portions and get 4 meals out of it. Love it!
If you are a fan of Toyama and Ishi's, you should love this place. I actually prefer Tanaka's teriyaki and hibachi meals over the others. I think this is because it comes out so fresh and you're not eating rice that was made that morning (or maybe a few days ago). Friends I've taken there also mentioned that the freshly made rice made a big difference in the taste of the meal. Though I'm not 100% sold that Tanaka's sauce is better than the others, it is equally as good. I did notice that you taste the mayo portion of the sauce more than the spice portion, but it was still very good. They sell their sauce by the bottle if you like it enough to take some home... I did.
Their sushi is amazing, and I love that I can get a hibachi combo with a sushi roll on the side to snack on (one of my biggest beefs with Toyama's... no sushi). The ingredients taste fresh and full of flavor, and the chef can properly roll and plate the dish in case there are any guys out there trying to impress a date.
Since I found out about the new owners I have been eating here at least once a week, and highly recommend it to anyone that likes GOOD affordable Japanese. It is great for lunch or dinner. Just make note that they are currently closed on Sundays (bummer for the lunch after church craving for sushi). The staff is always wonderful and polite. They are even willing to alter the menu items to accommodate your taste and healthiness options (something very important to me). After you order, you may not have your plate in front of you in under a minute like some other places, but when you get it you can taste that it was made fresh and just came off the grill.
Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
Pros: Close to home and very good combos or sushi
Cons: Closed on Sundays
