Best

This place has a nostalgic feel to it. It?s a old dinner type of restaurant. Pros: Great home cooked meal. Cons: No breakfest on menu

Worst

For around eight dollars a plate you might expect to get more food on your plate. When our plates came the beans looked like they'd been baked dry from sitting under the heat lamp...

Yummy! 8/26/2009

Yummy, yummy, yummy! I visited Taco Sal for the first time about one year ago. Since then, I have been going in about once a week. The food is always fresh and reminds me of my mom's cooking. In comparison to other local New Mexican restaurants, the prices are very reasonable and the servings are beyond plentiful. If you are craving green chile, I highly recommend the tortilla burger smothered in green. If you prefer red, they have the best carne adovada stuffed sopaipilla in town. The owners and managers seem to take pride in their business and really make an effort to make their customers feel welcome. Oh, and don't forget to try the sopaipilla bites....delicious!! more

HORRIBLE 8/3/2009

For around eight dollars a plate you might expect to get more food on your plate. When our plates came the beans looked like they'd been baked dry from sitting under the heat lamp so long. The taco shells were almost burnt. Potato chunks were deep fried and undercooked. We didn't complain until the bill came we were charged $2.75 a piece for EMPTY extra plates. We complained and the manager agreed that our server should have told us...but no discount. DON'T GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cons: Way overpriced and food sat under the heat lamp more

Bad News 10/11/2008

My family has frequented Taco Sal for over 20 years. It was a right of passage to bring visitors, friends and family to our favorite ""secret"". Since they have changed hands the food is ridiculously overpriced, less food, and not nearly as good as before. The last straw is when the refused to accept a gift certificate, because they insinuated that the previous owners were giving out gift certificates to everyone. Not worth my time, money, nor taste buds. Stay away from Taco Sal, it is not what it was, and very disappointing. Pros: Cleaner than it was Cons: Lacks color, staff is too hurried, food is not good for the price, none of the details of previous 2 owners. more

Good New Mexican Food / Family Owned 8/25/2008

Always good food. Reciently changed ownership and the food got even better. No atmosphere but good food. Beer only. Pros: Good food, good service. Cons: no atmosphere, so what! more

Don't mess with Taco Sal. Dusty car park and no decor. 2/20/2008

I was horrified to see suggestions that Taco Sal should pretty up the decor and get some Mexican rugs in. That's not what I go there for. I want harsh lighting, plastic table covers, stained aprons and a big bowl of chips and dip set in front of me when I sit down. Pros: Sleazy cheap Mexican food in a basic setting Cons: Sleazy cheap Mexican food in a basic setting more

Kitchy Nostalgia Revisited 8/5/2007

After reading a recent review of Taco Sal in a local area publication, I decided to check it out. Immediately I was reminded of being 10 years old, out to dinner with my folks. Yep, I remember that little lady who used to call out ""Hi Doll!"", and I also remembered the hot air balloon filled with suckers. The little lady is gone, but the hot air balloon still gets lowered from the ceiling for the kiddies. The place is under new management, and that's definitely a good thing. Only the owners have changed. The kitchen staff remains and the food continues to rock. I was happy to find out they changed the red chile. It no longer resembles pink pudding with a red chile flake here and there. Now, it's for real. Yummy, warm red chile pureed to a nice smooth consistency. Mmmmmmmmm. The chile rellenos are really good and the guacamole was a big winner at our table. The sopapillas at Taco Sal definitely take the cake. The flavor is unmatchable and they leave them a little on the thick side so you have something to hold as much honey as you wanna pour in! The place was super crowded when we went and we actually had to wait for a table, but it was ok. We didn't wait for long, and our waiter rocked. I will be heading back to Taco Sal very soon, for another plate of red chile cheese enchiladas and a few more of those plump yummy sopapillas. If you haven't been here for a while, check it out again. You'll be impressed. Pros: Great red chile. The best sopapillas. Great service. Cons: Had to wait, but they were super busy. Some new decor on the walls would be nice. more

Cattle call. 11/5/2006

This is a very crowded room with too many tables. The food is good but far from great and the atmosphere is worse than bad. There is simply no effort to make this place more appealing. They could spend $100 and lower the intensity of the lights and put up some Mexican rugs and sombrero's and change it quickly. more

Very Good New Mexican Food, reasonably priced 2/11/2006

If you are hungry for good New Mexican food, this is the place. Pros: Great New Mexican Foo, Attentive Service, Very Friendly Cons: Not alot of atmospher more

Wow! 7/16/2003

I had never really noticed this hole-in-the wall restaurant until my fiancee took me there last year. I have to say after MANY visits, that Taco Sal has great mexican food in a super-friendly environment. The waitstaff make you feel like you're a guest in their home over for dinner! Plus, Taco Sal's has the BEST sopapillas I have EVER had. (Very impressive, considering I am a lifelong New Mexico resident) Pros: Cheap, Great Sopapillas, Delicious Cons: not much atmosphere more
