Every time we visit Sushi Rock we are more impressed! The sushi is delicious and presented with detailed precision -- you will want to take a picture. It is great to find a place that offers delicious food, friendly service, relaxing music and art.. We enjoyed some incredible jazz outside in the ccourtyard. We love Sushi Rock!\r \r They have some of the best sushi rolls I've ever had. The rolls are small to medium sized but packed with ingredients, but they aren't so big you can't eat them in one bite. They take some of the seafood highlights of the area (shrimp and grouper) and use them in creative and new rolls. There is even a roll made out of filet mignon for our non-seafood eating friends. We live in Atlanta, but we come to St. Pete about 2-4 times a year and make sure that we eat here each time we are in town. The space is small and fun, but that does mean that you have to make reservations most nights, especially for parties over 4. \r \r Some people complained about slow service and a bit pricey. Its good sushi, so it takes a few extra minutes to prepare and it is not cheap. If I want inexpensive, I don't get sushi.\r \r Bottom line, its a great little spot, for a Tuesday or a Saturday night. Went there Sunday 6/1/08 around 5:50 PM and we were seated about 6:00 PM. They seated a few other tables over the next 10 to 15 minutes, took their drink orders, and delivered their drinks. We finally had to ask to have someone wait on us. The person that waited on us took our food orders and brought us water. Never took our drink orders until we asked 10 minutes later. The 3 of us were very polite and patient through this ordeal. One person in our party ordered a Thai dish and the other 2 ordered sushi. About 45 minutes went buy and we politely asked our waitress if there was an issue. At that time she admitted that they were short staffed and only had 1 person available to make sushi for the entire crowed restaurant. We asked about the Thai dish and found out that it had already been made and they were waiting to bring it out with the Sushi. So we asked to have the Thai dish brought out (it was already cold) and the 3 of us devoured it (we were very hungry by then). Sometime after that we noticed several people getting upset and leaving and realized they were having some real issues. We asked our waitress if the chef had started making our order and after checking explained that nobody had started preparing our Sushi. At that point, we paid our bill and left. I believe they were experiencing some employee issues (absences). The real problem was the lack of communication by the staff. If we had been told that the sushi area was short staffed, we would have ordered Thai food. Instead, we wasted an entire evening. Nobody deserves that type of treatment. We were there almost 2 hours and had to leave hungry. I am going to wait a couple of years before giving them another try. I am hoping they will correct their management issues by then. This is an oxymoronically good sushi place, in the best way possible. Upscale but relaxed, trendy and Americanized... but VERY good at what they do. Fresh fish, and unique combinations of rolls and sauces. Their negamaki is to die for, crab rangoon is spectacular, and my particular favorite rolls would be the Screamer, Hawaiian Roll, Island Volcano, and my roomate loves their Bang Bang Chicken roll. Fantastic edamame, best Value in the area. Fresh and huge bowl. Sashimi appetizer is choice fish, Very fresh. I have never been disappointed. This restaurant is a very trendy place to go but very tight on space. We heard everything the table next to us said. The service was decent, but they didn't have cream for my coffee. My sushi was good, but, like everything on the menu, it was very Americanized. Many things on the sushi menu were flash fried, smoked, or grilled. My husband's Korean dish was very bland and should've been very spicy. If you want to impress a date with a spendy dinner at a trendy restaurant, this is the place. Fresh, innovative sushi combined with fast and friendly service. GREAT Date place! The interior is decorated with blue glass lights and lots of wood. Beautiful. My only concern was that I always eat too much!!! more
