Best

The Sunset Restaurant, is a great pace. The entire menu is delicious. Best time to start your partying there is, right before the sun sets. Enjoy the sunset. Enjoy a great din...

Worst

I've been to this restaurant five times. The first time at brunch, the food and service were great. The second time, at lunch, the food was AWFUl, the service was OK. I decided ...

One of my favorites. 5/23/2012

The Sunset Restaurant, is a great pace. The entire menu is delicious. Best time to start your partying there is, right before the sun sets. Enjoy the sunset. Enjoy a great diner. Have some great alcoholic beverages (Double Black Russians). Go outside to the beach and smoke a joint and have a walk. Then go back in the restaurant and have some more Double Black Russians by the bar. This place is also a big magnet of movie stars. Don't drive home drunk! The CHP is broke and they need your money. Be safe. more

great atmosphere 12/17/2008

this place has such a great atmosphere, we sat at a table with nice big comfy chairs and enjoyed our meal and wine, and you literally get to watch the sun set out of the windows cause your right across from the beach. the atmosphere can be fun and flirty to romantic, and you can even rent this place out! more

Great place to meet cool people 7/23/2008

As a Malibu local, I am stoked to have a place like The Sunset so nearby. It always has a great vibe and there is always something going on. I'm usually in the bar area with the cozy low sofas, but went for dinner upstairs and was blown away by the food and friendly service. The Mussels were the best I ever had with chorizo! and spicy/smoky tomato broth...yum. My server was Kirstan? and I would request her again. Pros: Great drinks, amazing view and setting, Great for Foodies more

Best Experience Ever 7/23/2008

Went last Friday and had the best time. The view was amazing Everyone there is so friendly and the food was the best I have had in Malibu. more

Very romantic and cozy 7/1/2008

There was a music band playing when I went there with my friends. We had margaritas and appetizers while enjoying the live music (guitar and singing). The atmosphere was very romantic, and while settling into the cozy couch we were being served appetizers and drinks. Be aware, the kitchen closes at 9. Ask the staff for extra plates and napkins, otherwise it will end up on your lap. They don't bring it without asking for. Pros: Waterfront dining, atmosphere more

Sunset Restaurant 5/14/2008

I've been to this restaurant five times. The first time at brunch, the food and service were great. The second time, at lunch, the food was AWFUl, the service was OK. I decided to give them a break and try it one more time. This time, at dinner, the service was satisfactory, the food was so-so. I loved the location, so I tried a 4th time. The food was good as was the service. Based on my fourth experience, I went there again. The service was satisfactory; the food was awful. more

Foodie's paradise! Best wedding food I've ever had! 3/28/2007

I went to a very large wedding here a few weeks ago, and man was I impressed. I've had many friends get married in the last few years, and was almost always disappointed in the quality of the food and the timing of service when working with a large group. However, this place had their service and food quality down to an art. Everything I tasted was perfectly prepared, the perfect temperature, and perfectly paced. The escolar and the lamb I tried melted in my mouth, and the mini desserts were delicious. I even recommend the bartender, who with well over 200 guests, managed to still mix the perfect martini. This place is truly great, and the gorgeous location certainly adds to its charm. All I can say is that I wish I would have had my wedding here! Pros: Incredible food, beach chic location, great views of Westward Beach Cons: Needs bigger and better bathrooms more

One of Malibu's Most Underrated Gems 2/14/2007

I have eaten here about 6 times over the last few years since it became The Sunset after being the horrible Grey Whale. The food is always incredibly delicious and well-prepared, the staff is always warm and friendly, and I have never been disappointed. I highly recommend the Fijian Escolar (whenever they have it) and the Lava Cake is to die for. To be fair, I have never had a bad appetizer or entree at this restaurant. Sooo yummy! I recommend coming to The Sunset for dinner or brunch, especially on non-holidays. While there are often weddings on the weekends that take up the entire bottom floor of the restaurant, diners are generally seated in the upper dining room which is very peaceful, has great ocean views, and is quite romantic. The only weird thing about the venue is that you have to take an elevator to get upstairs and the only bathrooms are downstairs. Also, some of the local regulars can be a little ""different"", but who cares! Malibu is full of characters. Pros: Great food, great ocean views, great sunsets, dolphins, full bar Cons: Weird logistics with elevator to get to dining room, scary all-black bathrooms more

don't go here ... terrible service terrible food 1/2/2007

we made reservations here for new years eve, thinking this was a classy, four star restaurant, and that it would be a nice place to eat for this special occasion - it was a massive disappointment, to put it mildly. the service was HORRIBLE, it was every 20 minutes before the waitress came around, the first 2 courses we received were poor quality, little taste, just crappy food overall. the main course, 3 of us ordered the filet, they all came out rare, not what any of us ordered, and none of the food was warm, let alone hot. i would never go here again, let alone recommend it to anyone. do yourself a favor and don't spend your money here. more

busy, but not noisy-GREAT FOOD & SERVICE...VALET & INCREDIBLE SUNSET! WELL PRICED. 7/1/2006

We celebrated our 3 husband b-days last nite & had the most fun evening. Drove over Malibu Cyn. from Calabasas. Sunset offered us a beautiful, romantic location, round table by the window & sunset, (7:30 ish) Warm, friendly, accomodating service. They had very ample cocktails (martini's & belini's. The appetizers & dinners were excellent. We had one of the specials, a swordfish w/ salsa toping & fresh veggies beneath. Yummy mussel appetizer & indiv.flowerless choc. cakes w/ candles for each guy for dessert. Pros: A great location, fresh, well prepared & appetizing food. A round table for 6. Cons: Elevator to take you upstairs needs some mirrors or artwork to make it user-friendly. more

Perfect Place to Take Visitors from Out of Town 3/9/2006

The view is absolutely stunning. The food is very, very good. The only cons are that people come in right off the beach, so there are some scruffy people in shorts and flip-flops amongst the dressed-up couples. There is also a very strange bar scene downstairs. But the upstairs dining room is lovely, and you can watch dolphins jump out of the water while the sun sets over the ocean. I took my parents from Pennsylvania there, and they were thoroughly impressed. Pros: View, Good Food Cons: long drive from LA, trashy bar scene more

Awful restuarant - Nice sunset. 2/13/2006

Although the Sunset was great the resturant which I'd been to several times was consistently inconsistent- The food cold, the servers sometimes nice sometimes miserable- The drinks good sometimes terrible other times. The Owners seem to be nonchalant and somewhat rude. It's too bad- this could be a great place. Pros: good view Cons: bad everything else more

Great views 1/14/2006

Good food, great views, romance everywhere. Diffently worth the drive. Pros: view, menu, romance Cons: drive, drive, drive more

Comfy spot! 5/24/2005

I've gone for brunch on weekends and weeknight dinners. Everyone is friendly and nice, but stick to the basics when it comes to the food. The bar is a great place to watch the sunset and there is also a perfect room for parties. more
