I would imagine that, when one goes to a Subway restaurant, that person is usually thinking in terms of six or twelve inch subs.
However, there's something that will give you that great Subway taste on a smaller scale, and that is one of their delis.
A deli is what looks to be a Kaiser bun (btw, did you know that Subway bakes its own breads right there on site!?!--and what a variety of breads that is when it comes to the longer sandwiches), and it can be dressed with most meats that are otherwise offered.
At least, we find this to be so at the Subway we frequent the most out on Park Road (near to where it's intersected by Indiana 32/Nichol Avenue) in a community just to the west of Anderson called Edgewood (has Anderson address).
My mom will just sit in the minivan while I go in to get with the counter people and design our sandwiches for a particular meal.
That is tons of fun, and I'm always having ideas for putting together sandwiches.
I knew that we had reached "regular" status when the young lady waiting on me said something on the order of, "You'll be wanting two delis--right?"
Lots of times, I'll request that bacon be added to whatever meat I choose--and there's everything from a kind of old-fashioned loaf to turkey to beef to ham to tuna salad to seafood salad (not my mom's cup of tea, but I love it) to salami to pepperoni, and a variety of cheese to go with it.
Then, there are the toppings and condiments in great variety. There are your basic ones such as mustard and mayonnaise and your more out-of-the-box ones such as sweet onion and garlic butter.
Up until the E coli scare, one of the toppings was fresh spinach leaves.
They have melt-in-your mouth cookies, and we usually have the dark chocolate with the dark and white chips in it and the oatmeal raisin. We will have one each of those and divide them.
So, one of our meals generally consists of two delis, two cookies, two bottled beverages (generally, flavored bottled water), and one package of some kind of chips with the one we get the most frequently being original flavored Sun Chips.
Because we wanted to try the vegetarian burger here recently, and that isn't done on the delis, we ordered a six-inch instead and had the crew to cut it in half for us. It was absolutely delicious! Although we generally get (with the exception of heating the bacon) our sandwiches cold, the vegetarian burger sandwich was totally warmed from the soymeat to the bread (honey oat being our choice) with its cheese.
A common place for us to go is a little neighborhood park in the section known as Old Edgewood with its large, beautiful homes and flowing, landscaped lawns.
It's fun to sit in my minivan and watch people and critters enjoying their day.
Our picnics go on all year in all kinds of weather.
If it's not slick underfoot or we're snowed-in, our picnics can take place in January.
We don't always take our Subway items to the community park. Sometimes, we take them and eat them along White River with the Eisenhower Bridge and its traffic to our left and above us, for example.
If we're especially lucky, we'll have lots of Canada geese to watch.
And that's just one example of a mother/daughter picnic. Will be sharing more before long...
