Sturgeon Point Lighthouse - Harrisville, MI
Lighthouses are intriguing buildings - such fun to visit. Here in Harrisville lies a lighthouse bearing my name! Being a "Sturgeon" I had to visit one of the most picturesque and photogenic in Michigan while in the area over Labor Day holiday.
Built in 1869, shortly after MI became a state, it still retains its original living quarters, complete with furnishings. Now a maritime museum with two floors of rooms, it was most interesting to tour. I was impressed with the memorabilia from the old great lakes ships. The lighthouse itself has the typical spiral staircase to the top, overlooking Lake Huron from Sturgeon point.
Just a short drive north 3 1/2 miles on US 23 from the small fishing town of Harrisville, this lighthouse is easy to locate. The parking lot is a very short walk, taking you by the gift shop and an old log one room school house, "Bailey". Although there is no entrance fee, the volunteers appreciate any donation to help with their restoration efforts. All buildings, except the lighthouse tower, are handicap accessible. Hours are 10-4 pm for the buildings 7 days a week Memorial Day to mid Sept. The grounds are open year round. I suggest you bring sturdy walking shoes for a nice walk out to the tip of the point. If you like searching for that special stone/rock, bring your pail and shovel.
