Old Bank Building, New Food 8/29/2006

Fans of the Morimoto Buddakan empire who find themselves in Philly will enjoy not only outposts of these two faves, but also a fantastic seafood restaurant in STRIPED BASS. The setting: an old bank building re-fitted as a hot dining spot. The food: delicious seafood with nouvelle cuisine flair. The portions: small, which is good for the body and not so good for the wallet as...The price: high ($37/entree and you are going to be ordering at least 2 if not 3 courses). Extensive wine list and attentive waitstaff (don't be distracted by the fact that they all seem to wear ill-fitting uniforms) are checks in the plus column for this central city spot. Great decor, but the piped in electronica could use a rest. more

yet another overpriced hoity toity stephen starr restaurant. i'm so sick of them! this one is primarily a seafood restaurant, though there was one meat dish and i think a chicken dish. i went there with business clients and didn't have to pay for it, otherwise i would never have dined here. they insist on taking your coat even if you don't want them to, and the waitstaff hovers. nice if it was to refill your glass, but they didn't bother doing that. they just hovered. even if i liked fish, which i don't, i wouldn't go back. more

eclectic American 10/17/2005

Striped Bass has stunning decor, with enormous, extravagantly-draped windows, elegantly appointed tables, and an overall ambiance of affluence, both from its food offerings and its patrons. A huge stainless steel sculpture of a leaping fish presides over the open kitchen, the latter giving diners a chance to observe the preparation of the finny creatures and crustaceans that are the sole foodstuffs served here. Vegetables, salads, and desserts are also available. With culinary expertise focused on eclectic American meals an emphasis on seafood, this is definitely a fancy (yet kinda casual) restaurant. more

A great special occasion restaurant 8/30/2005

A winner on Walnut St. Look no further for a striking restaurant in a converted bank building. Elegant service to match the decor. The food is superb. Strpied Bass also has the most beautifully appointed restroom I have seen. Also a wonderful 3 course Sunday brunch (appetizer, main course, dessert and coffee) more

  • The Scene
The marvel of this converted brokerage house building is not so much its indisputable grandeur--soaring ceilings, tall leaded windows and polished pink marble columns that look like tongue in aspic--but how comfortable the space is. Fabric-draped chandeliers soften the cavernous space and plants separate multilevel dining sections into intimate areas. Prices are stiff enough to push the crowd towards generous expense accounts and special occasions, but there's still an edge of casual chic to the place, especially at the bar, where skilled mixologists serve perfectly stirred or shaken cocktails.

    The Food
You can drop 200 bucks on the caviar sampler, but it's more fun to see what the chef comes up with for the day's appetizers, based on what's fresh and in season. Dayboat sea scallops may be seared with pickled kumquat and orange oil or made into a ceviche basking in jalapeno and lime. A rich shrimp bisque, composed at the table, is sufficiently rich and subtly briny to make strong men fall to their knees, and a silky polenta with crispy garlic and a strong taleggio cheese is a great prelude for, well, anything. Count on surprising flavor counterpoints and hearty portions. Entrees are almost exclusively from the water, although a swordfish might be wrapped in Serrano ham and Arctic char accompanied by a short rib ravioli.
