If you're a knitter (or possibly a crochet-er), String of Purls is going to be like an oasis of yummy wool goodness for you. Boasting what seems like a zillion yarns in almost every conceivable color, separated by color in giant wine-box shelves (the squares with the big X's in the center -- that type.), this store carries an incredible amount of inspiration for knitters of all stripes.
I will say that while other stores in town seem to have more by the way of practical for the traditional (and slightly-adventurous) knitter, String of Purls feels artsier in its yarn choices, and has a bit more of the novelty to it. They stock a wide selection of Noro, Brown Sheep, and Colinette, as well as the fluffy stuff. They do also have some local handspun that I'm fond of. (I made it, so I'm a bit biased in that area.)
There are books and patterns (including some written by the staff themselves) and a giant selection of needles. I'm particularly fond of the little extras they have, as well -- things like dichroic glass buttons, dyed silk ribbons, and cases and knitting baskets and stitch markers and notecards and and and...I could go on all day. (And I would, if time and space permitted.)
I highly recommend this store for knitters with a youthful energy, who love to talk to people passionate about the art of knitting and the love of yarn. They offer one on one knitting instruction and classes, too -- so if you aren't yet a convert, stop by. They'll help make you an addict.
