I have been going to this place for a few years now and can honestly say that I have not had one bad dish yet. The daily specials are amazing, the mussels in the white wine sauce is out of this world. This is one of the best kept secrets in Astoria. I would reccommand this restaurant to anyone. I love this place. My fiance an I go here as often as we can. Last night we were there and we always order specials. I have the Baked cod and shrimp dish with alfredo sauce. He had the Bacon wrapped wrapped herb stuffed chicken. Both dishes were amazing. We are never disappointed. Check this place out. Service was excellent. more

I read all of the reviews before going and honestly, I have no idea what any of these people are talking about. From the minute I stepped through the door, all I could think of was that it looked like one of those restaurants Gordon Ramsey rips apart on Hell's kitchen. First off, it smelled weird, kind of like a faint smell of old fish that had been sitting in trash. I should have left right then, but I figured, I should give it a chance. To be honest, my french onion soup was pretty good, but I ordered a special off of the menu and it was awful. Broiled scallops sounds good, but the little 1"" cuttings of bacon were out of place and served no purpose, they were also really greasy. My companion's meal, fish n chips was disgusting. I used to be a server so I wasn't about to send the meal back or leave a bad tip, but seriously don't go here. And when I called originally to find out directions, the guy suggested I make reservations because ""it gets pretty full on a Saturday night"" but there were 2 other tables. What a waste of money! Continental menu with a twist of French and little bit of Irish. I'm addicted to the prince edward musscles. The soups never disappoint . Great wine selection and the specials are always good. I recently took two of my closest friends, a couple, to Stove, a local Astoria treasure which still seems to be one of the neighborhood's best-kept secrets. I promised them a meal they'd not soon forget, as I had been there not too long ago with another friend who agreed with me that the food was absolutely wonderful. In particular (and I noticed other people who have rated this restaurant have commented on it, too) the warm beet and goat-cheese salad was truly a masterpiece in flavor and presentation: caramelized pralines garnished a mixed spring-green salad, with generous dollops of herbed goat cheese and sliced beets in a balsamic reduction; I spread the delicious cheese on the crusty bread that is served throughout the meal - you could literally make a meal of just the salad and the bread here! For my entree, I ordered a savory goulash; the meat was fork-tender and the sauce was rich and creamy, traditionally prepared with sour cream and loaded with flavorful mushrooms...I dare say it was as good as my grandmother's, in fact! For dessert, I shared a slice of the heavenly cheese cake, which is smooth as velvet yet light as air, floating on a bed of oreo-cookie crumb crust - divinely satisfying but mysteriously not over-filling! It must be the fresh-whipped cream that the chef prepares to make this sinfully delicious treat...\r And who could forget the sumptuous fruity cocktails? I don't quite remember what the concoction was, but I remember it had Malibu (what can be bad about that?) and was the perfect salute to a summer evening...\r My friend, who also enjoys cooking as I do, is usually difficult to impress, especially since he's born & raised in Astoria. His fiancee, my best friend, is a great fan of fine cuisine, and the three of us agreed that this is by far one of Astoria's finest restaurants - I can't believe I've lived here nearly 8 years and have only discovered it now! Treat your loved ones to this little gem - a great staff at a terrific dining spot! I've been wanting to come to this restaurant for a while. A friend told me about it but I just hadn't had the chance until last week. The food was absolutely phenomenal! And the waitress was very confident in answering our questions. We got the appetizer special for the night which was a crock of mac n cheese, I can't describe it much but it was really good! It was garnished with crumbs of some kind which gave it an interesting texture. Then we went on to have the ribeye steak? I don't know, some kind of steak. And I got the pork chop, ordered medium. Our food came out and we tasted it. I just couldn't believe that food this good was right down the block from us! My pork chop could have been a bit tastier. I had it with the french fries and they were good but it also came with a warm tomato and zucchini salad. But it was really juicy. They won't go beyond medium for health reasons. I'm not always a steak person, but I tried the steak. It was so juicy at medium and the sauce was unbelievable. Our waitress told us about the sauce but I wasn't expecting it to be that great. I don't know how traditional the food is at Stove, but it makes for really good Irish food! I haven't had a steak that good in the city. I've had only a few but none that can come close to that one. I just visited this place last Friday and everything was delicious ! My friend and I split the warm beet salad appetizer and we both had the sea bass special. Our waitress was very helpful and patiently answered all our questions. The prices are very reasonable, especially when you take the quality into account. Make sure not to judge too quickly, this place looks like nothing from the sidewalk and the inside decor isn't exactly chic, but you'll forget all about that as soon as your food arrives. My only ""complaint"" was that a slightly overeager busboy kept trying to clear our plates long before we were done, as we were determined to finish every crumb. \r Strangely its almost a little hard to describe Stove, because its sort of like a regular ( very good ) restauraunt. I wouldn't agree with those who describe the food as french - I don't think there were any traditionally ""french"" items on the menu, nor did I see (or taste) any evidence of french cfooking techniques. I know it says that this is a french restaurant but they serve Shepherd's pie and when I went a few weeks ago most of the staff was Irish, but that was not a problem at all! In fact, we had the most wonderful waitress and she was so helpful recommending a bottle of wine for my father and I. She was incredibly patient and the bartender who served us while we waited just a few short minutes for our table was extremely friendly as well. The prices are incredibly fair, especially for the portions and quality of the food! The feel of Stove is somewhat intimate, and my father and I both commented upon leaving (as the Chef himself said goodnight and thank you to us from the bar) that we felt as if we had been over at friends' house for dinner. The food was excellent! My dad had a crab cake appetizer and he did not leave a single bit on the plate, he said it was great. I had the warm goat cheese salad with candied nuts and it was by far the best goat cheese salad I've ever had. For our entrees, my dad had the open face tuna special topped with shrimp, scallops and mussels. He said it was delicious and rich, and the portion was so large he could not finish it. I ordered the pork chop with apple compote and it was just as good. The chop itself was enormous and I believe I had to take over half of it home in a to-go container. The ambiance was relaxing and comfortable and the entire experience was perfect. I will be taking my mother here in a few weeks when she comes to visit! My girlfriend and I popped into this place for an early dinner. I had the chicken curry special and she had the pasta special which consisted of portobello mushroom filled ravioli with a marsala sauce. Everything was fantastic. The service was great and the prices were amazing. We finished the meal with their oreo crusted cheesecake topped with homemade whipped cream which was absolutely delicious. Main course, desert and we both had a glass of wine and the total came out to $55 - you really can't beat that and it sure beats the city.\r \r If you ever find yourself in Astoria - you must give this place a try. more

There's something about a place a bit off of the beaten path. Stove is a few blocks off of the well-known Steinway Street in Astoria, but its non-central location only makes it more intimate and quaint of a venue. The food...first rate. Always an abundance of eloquently prepared, fresh and most importantly delicious specials of the night. Coming from a perspective of one that frequents restaurants all over Manhattan and the tri-state, I tell you no lies this is one of my absolute favorites. The value for your money is unbelievable. (The house salad/ or caesar salad is delicious with homemade dressing only $4.50!! / Rarely a special over $25). The chefs are very creative...think all american cuisine with a fusion of anything and everything-especially when it comes to the specials!\r The service...since its a mom and pop shop type of a place you are treated like family. The wait staff are friendly and sweet. \r The price...as I had previously mentioned, you get the max for the minimum $$. This place is one big review away from blowing up. \r \r All in all, an absolute pleasure...I dare you to have a less than fabulous meal at Stove!\r Pros: food amazing Cons: location a bit off of the beaten path...but this becomes a pro for the most part. more

This place was just perfect. I had the goat cheese salad with candied walnuts, mango chutney and greens in a balsamic reduction (on special) -- wow, it was so good. Had the fish and chips for dinner, which I couldn't finish, but it was good, too. My boyfriend had the pate and the 16 oz. shell steak. He is very picky about steaks, and raved about this one. The waitress was awesome, and the we thought everything was very reasonably priced (including the wine). We were Sans Souci lovers, too, and (dare I say) I think we've found something better! The waitress mentioned that the chef/owner is trained in French cooking, and it shows. Although as others have mentioned, the place has definite Irish flair. Highly, highly recommended. We went for Mother's Day and their prie-fix menu was great. Our waitress was very attentive and super nice. The place does not look that nice from the outside but once you go in, its very inviting. The crab cakes are to die for and the prices for wines were very affordable. We had a great time and I would definetly go back, no question about it!! Even for most people in Astoria, this place is a trek. We walked about 20 blocks, with the cold wind blowing through us, to get to Stove and it was well worth it! The service is lovely and the specials are always varied and interesting. I ordered the buttered scallops with vegetables and they were incredibly fresh and delicious. The walls, decorated with ancient Irish lettering, complement the Irish-inspired food and the charming staff. It's the perfect spot for a date, to take your parents or to catch-up with good friends. Stove is a welcome newcomer to the amazing Astoria restaurant scene and one can only hope that it doesn't disappear like the late Le Sans Souci for which I am still mourning. Given the influx of displaced manhattanites to Astoria, Stove is just what the doctor ordered. Serving the local established community, and the newbies, Stove offers something for everyone. Clientele ranges from familes and couples to singletons enjoying a group night out. \r \r The food is creative, outstanding and suits all palettes. I've had a lot of items on the menu and everything was wonderful. Even the good old shepherd's pie, which a lot of places seem to screw up for whatever reason, is excellent. The soups are all homemade and the chef seems to come up with original takes on standard classics. Check out the indian vol-au-vent if it's on the menu . Another unique thing about Stove is its choice of steaks. As someone who can never finish a full 16oz steak, it's refreshing to see an 8oz option on the menu as well. There is always an ample choice of seafood on the menu, so if you're not all about meat you can still find something you'd like. All the entrees are expertly presented and there is never a need for seconds. The sides are as thoughtfully turned out as the entrees and top marks must go to the kitchen for above average effort. The deserts are made in-house and the trifle is to die for. \r \r The wine list at Stove is not overly complicated but still manages to include interesting wines from all over. \r \r The staff at Stove are warm, welcoming, and eager to explain items on the menu or suggest a companion wine. There is a good-natured ambience in the restaurant that makes people come back again and again. During the summer the garden is open and is a great place to have a leisurely meal. Brunch is served on Sunday's and is a popular choice with the locals. The Irish breakfast is a must have, and if you can't deal with all that meat, there are plenty of other options. \r \r All in all, Stove is definitely worth a visit and, I promise, it won't be your last. Stove is THE best place to go when feeling a bit groggy on a Sunday morning after a night at the bar. The Irish breakfast is by far the best in the neighborhood. Not greasy, completely tasty and served by staff who are welcoming and happy to help, you really can't beat it. So many ""Irish breakfats"" in near by places don't even compare. This place is definately worth trying, and once you've been, you will be back! \r I wish it were open Saturday mornings too but it makes it all the better when you can make it on a Sunday! Great Place! Me and my girlffiend live right down the block from it and were skeptical about trying it at first, but once we did - we were very glad we did. The service was excellent, the food was delicious, and we can't really beat how close it is. I hope this place stays open forever. It's an odd location being that there is not much else around the area, but it is defintley worth a try if you don't live around here. Beats other similar restaurants like Brick easily! This was a very friendly restaurant. I found the place to be more Irish than French, but that's a very positive attribute for me. Our waitress was sweet and she kept us laughing. this is one of the best restaurants i have been in a long time, my wife and i go in all the time. the specials are always great, they have great beers and the guinness is poured well. please give this place a try, it may not be on steinway or close to the train but it is well worth walking over to. very reasonable prices, great wait staff. go for it more

Just stumbled upon this restaurant last week. The soups were amazing as well as the entrees. I had the streak with a red wine sauce and my date had the chicken marsala (on special) Both were ffantastic. The menu has something for everyone: salads, soups, steak, seafood, chicken...and I hear the desserts are excellant. The place is cheap comsidering what you get. Definatly try it out. Pros: food is great service is great and it's pretty cheap Cons: on street parking can take a few mins, but not too bad more
