The world today is a different place than even ten years ago. Everyone’s a critic because everyone can post a review of a restaurant online.
This isn’t something I’ve invented and it damn well better be something a restauranteur should understand and drive into their teams every day.
Back in the winter, my wife & I visited Sports on a cold Friday evening. Neither of us could recall anything extraordinary about the visit except the menu had a pretty good variety.
3rd Friday June, we decide to try it again. We took a risk because of the 3rd Friday but the place was only 2/3 full when we arrived. Not too busy but a good crowd that’ll bring a smile to an owner’s face.
I think they threw 15 more tables into the place since our last visit because there wasn’t 6 inches to squeeze between the tables. That wasn’t a big problem since we weren’t there for ballroom dancing, just a dinner out to support Wyandotte business.
After we ordered a couple drinks, I ordered a pierogi burger & my wife ordered a chicken wrap. That was the last we saw of our server for the next 40 minutes. Now we aren’t the impatient types that expect the servers every two minutes but we were beginning to think they forgot about us and maybe we should go somewhere else before we drop into a coma. Just as we were getting a bit antsy & about to leave, the food came.
Our orders weren’t complicated, burger medium & chicken wrap less lettuce. What we got was a burger that seamed like they started cooking it when we ordered it and brought it out seconds after it came off the grill. I’m surprised they had the talent to keep the inside of the burger from burning. It was so well done the only thing that could make the burger worse was the fried pierogi that they started frying on Tuesday. On the plus side, the fries I up ordered for an extra buck were only slightly less crispy than the potato chips they substituted. Also, they acted like my concience and made the healthiest burger in the world. Not because it was low fat or low cholesterol or some such thing. This was bar none, smallest burger I’ve EVER been served in a bar. This was just marginally bigger than a White Castle burger.
My wife commented that the she was surprised they could boil so much flavor out a chicken fillet before slicing it up for her wrap.
Unfortunately, that’s not where the story ends. Our daughter loves fried pickles so when our order came we put in an order of pickles to go. That was our last mistake. We were through choking down our food, had to ask for our check, got our check & paid the bill 5 minutes before they could bring out the order of pickles. It would have been quicker to run the order over to LTB than wait for this place.
Here we are in the midst of a big depression where everyone is trying to stretch every dollar and dinners out are more a luxury than a habit. Therefore how money is spent makes a huge difference. When I go out, I want value for my money. Again, restauranteurs should understand this more than I do. If I go to a restaurant and have to wait too long for a small portion of low quality, overcooked food, there is nothing more I can do except let my shipwreck be a warning for others.
Sports Brew Pub has done nothing to earn your money. Please take my advice and do not go to this place.
