Word Class! 3/25/2006

I visited the Speed Art Museum during a travelling impressionists exhibit. I was very impressed with the museum itself. The volunteers were extremely knowledgeable as they led visitors around and told about the paintings. There was adequate parking in the area. The gift shop offered a nice variety. more

Surprisingly good 8/15/2005

When I think of Louisville, KY I don't think fine art. So I was pleasantly surprised when I visited the Speed Museum. They have quite a nice collection which I think can be appreciated by people of pretty much all tastes. Mixed in with the traditional and modern art, you will find local and regional artists, as well as the special exhibits that the museum hosts. This museums biggest drawback is that it is not located downtown near many of the other museums and attractions, so it is a bit of work getting there. But it was definitely worth the extra time that it took. And best of all, for those who cannot afford it, admission is free. Though a $4 donation is recommended. more

Local art museum 8/12/2005

The Speed Art Museum is Louisville's best known art museum. It is located on the University of Louisville's (local college) campus. They have had exhibits from very famous artists and they tend to rotate their exhibits rather frequently. To the best of my knowledge, they to not showcase local artists (unless they may be part of an exhibit they are showing). They do offer parking, but you have to pay for it. more

a good museum 8/10/2005

I have been here several times. I think it is the only art museum here in Louisville and is worth a look! They have many different displays throughout the year so it not the same paintings month after month. It is very well designed and always kept clean. I wouldn't recommend it for the very young since they tend to like to climb the sculptures that are displayed through the museum. more

Louisville is lucky to have an art museum of such high quality. The Speed Art Museum has been around sic=nice the 1920's and is Kentucky's oldest and largest museum. It contains paintings, sculptures, tapestries, and furniture covering ancient items to the modern. They have over 10,000 permanent pieces and have special exhibitions. They offer educational programs for both schools and adults. they are closed on Mondays. more

The Speed Art Museum was established in 1927, and is the oldest and largest art museum in the state. It is located on the Belknap campus of the University of Louisville. It houses pieces from ancient Egypt to contemporary pieces. It was expanded in 1997 and since has hosted exhibits of art, photography and design, bring art to the people of Louisville. more
