delicious food 3/7/2009

I went here with my mother and the food was absolutely wonderful! My mom had the duck breast and I had the salmon and they were excellent! There weren't many people in the restaurant on a Sunday night and I was surprised because the food was delicious! Pros: seafood more

Dinner with friends, The Scandinavian Way. 3/2/2009

I have been to Denmark and Sweden many times, and this place is more authentic than I expected. That being said, I went with a group of friends and even those who never dare trying something new, loved it! Herring isn't as scary as some think, it's delicious when served with their homemade potatoe salad. And I recommend the Swedish Meatballs? a must-try! And the herb-crusted salmon was grilled to perfection.\r \r The servers were so friendly (although non of them were from Scandinavia) and they explained everything so well when we asked about the food.\r \r A great place to go as a group. Highly recommended.\r \r Pros: Great personal service Cons: Servsers not all Scandinavian more

Great Good! Great Prices! 1/22/2009

I was at Smorgas Chef midtown today with some associates for lunch and it was wonderful. The service was very friendly and I now see why the Swedish meatballs are so highly recommended.\r Our server was charming and even provided us with a gift card at the end of our meal for $20 off our next meal.\r It was well-lit and very cozy on a cold winter day...\r I will definately be back! more

Mediocre food & slo-o-o-owwww service - not worth trying 1/16/2009

I had lunch at Smorgas Chef Midtown today. It was very disappointing. I waited 15 minutes, sitting there with my menu, but no one came over. It wasn't crowded; there were only 4 other parties there. It never should've taken so long! I called out to the waitress just to get coffee. Either she was very disorganized or the restaurant is not set up efficiently -- after she brought it, she had to run off to find milk and sweetener.\r \r And when the coffee arrived, it was cold.\r \r It took another 10 minutes to get hot coffee. Did she ask me if I was ready to order then? Nope! She had to run off to get the phone (while the manager on duty was eating at the bar). I had to get her attention again to order. I asked for the Nordic onion soup to be followed by a ham & Jarlsberg sandwich. She asked if I wanted the Power Lunch deal, which includes soup, sandwich and salad for $14. Since I had been granted an inordinate amount of time to peruse the menu, by this time I was quite familiar with it, so I told her that sandwich wasn't on the Power Lunch menu. So she looks at it and mumbles, ""Oh, you're right."" I asked her if I could get that sandwich on the Power Lunch menu, and she said, ""Um, no."" Okay, so, let's go with what I originally ordered (sigh).\r \r Note to all servers: Know your menu!\r \r She was nice, not rude, just clueless and slower than molasses. The soup was nothing out of the ordinary -- but the busboy who brought it was careless and it slopped out of the bowl, all over the little tray it came on. By this time, 3 other tables had left and only 1 had come in, so I'm puzzled as to why she needed a busboy to bring the soup to me. Anyway...\r \r The ""ham"" in the sandwich was actually Canadian bacon, and there was way too much mustard. I had to scrape a lot off. Sliced tomatoes (not in menu's description) were pale and flavorless. Overall, I considered my meal mediocre, almost bad. The place is shabby, the seats uncomfortable, the bathroom dirty. \r \r Don't waste your time. Pros: Could be a good location for businesses in the area, if economy gets better Cons: Lacks heart, staff doesn't care, food isn't very good, place is a little dirty more

Free Bottle of Wine 12/3/2007

I dined here the other night with my boyfriend and their ""free bottle of wine"" promo got me into their establishment. They offer you a few options for your wine and our choice was very good, it was a Portugese Merlot. As recommended I got the Swedish Meatballs and they were very good. For dessert I had the Chocoloate Mousse and that was delicious. The service is very friendly and accomodating, they made us feel welcome and special. Portions for courses were perfectly sized as well. They also have a price fix menu available and it looks like a good value and feed. Overall, super pleased with our evening and will return. Pros: Free Bottle of Wine Promo, Service, Chocolate Mousse and Swedish Meatballs Cons: It's a small restaurant, tables are very close together more

really cool cocktails 7/31/2007

I tried this spot for dinner and drinks last night and was definitely impressed. The service was great, super friendly and the drink menu was unbelievable. I would definitely recommend the Swedish meatball sandwich. more

AMAZING EXPERIENCE 4/21/2007

I went to Smorgas midtown for the first time this evening. My best friend and I wanted a nice outside dining experience. I suggested Smorgas for a few reasons. One being that we both wanted to try some thing new, 2 being that I know my best friend has a thing for Swedish Meatballs and 3 I saw the listing on city search and was intrigued. We arrived at 9pm on a saturday evening and where seated outside immediately. We split a blonde beer 18.00 a bottle. As I expected my best friend ordered the meatball pre-fix. $24.00 for soup or salad starter meatball with mash veggies and lingonberries. I had the steak pre-fix for $34.00 which came with french fries and veggies. The dishes were delicious for lack of better words. the ambiance was great .. the service was great as well. All in all a very pleasant experience and will be for more to come. I highly reccomend this location! Pros: service, ambiance, food quality Cons: street traffic noise more

Great little place 9/22/2006

I went here for lunch the other day, and I absolutely loved it. It had a really nice atmosphere, the waitstaff was very helpful and quick, and the food was great. I really loved the meatballs I ordered, and my friend had the chicken, which was also delicious. There's a nice crowd here, and you can relax with a drink from the bar while you're waiting for your food. I would definitely come back. Pros: Good food, nice music more

Best place to get Swedish meatballs 5/9/2006

I never had REAL Swedish food before. This place is tucked away in midtown. When I went for Sunday dinner it was quiet and the neighborhood was charming. They had outdoor seating and good waitstaff. I recommend the Swedish meatballs. It came with mashed potatoes and lignonberry sauce. Delicious. The portions were enormous and I didn't have room for dessert. They have a great little bar and have drink specials from 5-7 daily. I'm definitely going to go there again. Pros: good food, friendly waitstaff, reasonable prices Cons: can't think of any more

Best brunch in the city. 5/1/2006

I live near by and love coming to this place for brunch. The servers are friendly and go out of their way to make sure you're happy. The food is very flavorful, and I find myself always raving about it to my friends. (who knew I would like Swedish food so much?). The brunch deals are reasonable and I think the bright yellow coloring of the walls makes it feel incredibly warm and inviting. I would highly recommend this place. Pros: Great Deals, Fantastic Food, Cool Outdoor Seating more

Great 4/16/2006

Everything was just wonderful. The service was attentive and fun and the food great!- Loved the seafood salad, and the spiced vanilla mohito hit the spot after a long day. Can't wait to go back! more

Swedish Meatballs.... 11/9/2005

...are to die for. This was the best meal I've had in a restaurant in a long time. Everything on the menu is fabulous. It's a very nice and cozy restaurant and the service is good. All the waiters were exceptionally nice. Highly recommend it. Pros: Good Food, Good Service more

Good Brunch 9/11/2005

This place makes a nice swedish omelette. For those that don't know what this is, you should go there. They also had some traditional home fries which are baked and not fried. Good place for a Sunday afternoon after a nite of boozin. If you are a ketchup lover like myself, they don't really have it here. I'm not sure if it's b/c the Swedes don't use it, or they just didn't have any left. I got it in a little plastic Mc D's cup. Also they aren't big coffee drinkers but the coffee they have is good and 3 bucks a cup.....b/c it's organic. Never heard of organic coffee beans. more

Love the new Smorgas Chef! 4/10/2005

I work on Wall Street and always love going to Smorgas Chef down there. I'm very excited to now have a Smorgas Chef right here -- a block away from where I live in Midtown. Same great food, but even better ambiance. Although service was a bit disorganized (I went the day after they opened), the servers were very attentive and friendly. Love the new wine and cocktail list! more

Lousy imitation of Scandinavian food 4/6/2005

Being from one of the Scandinavian countries I grew up eating meatballs and herring almost daily so I was excited to try out this place but unfortunately I was really disappointed. The meatballs both tasted and looked like cheap ready-made frozen meatballs and they had that odd, gummy texture. Not only was the food downright bad but it was really pricey too. I guess I have been spoilt by places like the AQ cafe in the Scandinaviahouse where you get a phenomenal homemade smorgasplate for the same price. Pros: Location, Decor Cons: Bad food, expensive more
