Editorial review from Citysearch 7/30/2012

I am trying to find out some information about Dr. William Taylor at Texas Orthopedics..I hope I am in the right place! I was just diagnosed with degenerative disc disease and I also have 2 herniated discs in my cervical spine. I'm not sure what else is wrong because I can't find a doctor that will order any imaging (other than an ER in San Antonio). I have been told multiple times that I'm too young to have this many problems and it's all muscular..but they don't know that for sure because they've never ordered an MRI, or even an x-ray. The ER doctor told me that I need to see a spine specialist and that I need an MRI. I am wondering if this clinic is caring and non-judgmental enough to order these tests and prescribe pain medicine until I can get through treatment, for breakthrough pain. Just because I'm 30 years old does not mean that my pain in insignificant or nonexistent! I am a single mother of 3 children and I'm a waitress. I'm on my feet pretty much all day every day and my back/neck pain has caused my quality of life to be terrible...finding a doctor in Austin that will actually listen and help has been a task that I have failed at for 2 years. If anyone has any advice I would really appreciate it! more

5 minute diagnosis 1/27/2011

Everything with setting up the appointment, the p.a., and xray tech were very good, but I left the office feeling more frustrated and upset than when I came in. I was taken in to get xrays first, which noone told me I would be doing or asked if my insurance would be okay without precertification, which is perfectly fine. Dr. Smith came in shortly after, asked me to do two arm raises, and then promptly began discussing how my problem was a ""physical exercise"" thing. Now I understand that if he thought I didn't need any type of surgery due to my xrays or my arm movement, but he gave very little reason for his diagnosis after having met me for 5 minutes. In fact, He also did not discuss the xrays or listen to the rest of my history which spans 25 years of different injuries. He did not look at my prior CT scan and then asked me, ""how does your neck feel?"". How does it feel? I don't know, I'm in pain!! That is why I am here to see you so YOU can tell me what is wrong with it. \r Then he went on to tell me that my family doctor was a liar when I told him I was diagnosed with arthritis in the back 15 years ago, and dismissed the other diagnosis/comments from my previous physical therapists, doctors, and pain I was suffering from a masseuse. Quite frankly, I believe he took one look at me, saw that I was a bit overweight, and told me I needed to exercise. This is unbelievable to me. Up until my reinjury last fall, I hiked 3-5 times a week and went sailing every weekend and yet after 3 years of physical therapy that has not moved me forward, he dares to tell me it is ""an exercise thing"". \r If you want an in depth doctor that had some sort of bedside manner, do not go see this doc. I really hate writing negative comments about someone, but in all my years of seeing different professionals, this is one time I was incensed by the total disregard for me as a patient. In fact, I never had the opportunity to talk at all. He was more interested in what HE had to say even after I asked him why I was experiencing numbness in both arms.\r Wow, buyer beware....wish they had negative stars here. more

Was LUCKY and found the BEST!! 5/5/2010

I am truly blessed that Dr. Smith was on call in the ER the day I crushed my ankle. He did a wonderful job at repairing my leg and ankle. He explained everything to me and my family as far as what was going to happen in the next 6 hours of surgery. I feel very strongly that he was looking in my best interest. The following two in a half years he has taken great care of me. He followed up with me in a timely manner. His staff is super nice and work in tidy facilities. I would recommend him to everyone I know. I would feel confident leaving my 2 year old in his hands, knowing that he would care for him as his own. Dr. Smith also does wonders in volunteer work. He was part of the FIRST team of doctors to arrive in Haiti after the tragedy. Eager to work and help the people of Haiti, he turned a facility into a clinic and operating rooms. Dr. Scott Smith is a very giving, responsible, prompt doctor. I am very happy to have Dr. Scott Smith as my orthopedic doctor. Pros: Explaining your situation to you. more

Great at sports medicine! 11/14/2008

I do not agree with the previous patient's review. Quite the contrary - I twisted my ankle while playing soccer. He was compassionate and as eager to get me back on the field as I was. I was pain-free and able to get back on the field within a matter of weeks. Pros: Great group there at Texas Orthopedics more

If you are under about 35, dont even bother 3/9/2007

Just got a second opinion on my shoulder today, after going to Dr Adams in the beginning. Looks like I do have a frozen shoulder and also looks like I have arthritis. Dr. Adams told me, ""I wont do surgery, you dont have anything wrong. I guess I will send you to someone about this pain you SAY you are having in your shoulder since I see nothing wrong."" Couldnt be because im 20 could it? \r \r I wouldnt recommend this doctor if you are young, as he seems to think young people only want surgery or pain medication- I surely dont want surgery, and have had pain medication that I was given over a year ago for my shoulder that I STILL havent taken. \r \r I didn't appreciate the waste of time and money, and the fact that the doctor talked to me like I was stupid, and as if I were 5. I dont think he realized that I am over 1/2 way through nursing school, and dont need to be talked down to. more

knee replacement 12/17/2006

Dr. Adams replaced both of my husband's knees. He did an excellent job and was caring and compassonate. He was always available when needed and cares about his patient making sure that they receive the best. When you have an appointment he is quick to get you in and taken care of. Pros: both faciliies are easy to get to and you can see him at the one best for you. more

He did not impress me 8/9/2006

I did not care for his bedside manner. He was less than friendly & disinterested in what I had to say & not at all sympathetic about the pain I was in with a broken elbow. I had used Dr. Smith a few years before for another issue and would not have returned had I realized it was the same Dr. (different location, common name). I just went by whoever the Dr. in the Emergency Room recommended. I was told to make a return appt. and I requested a different Dr. in the same office. I was told that Dr. Smith would have to approve that & that he probably would not, that I would have to go to another orthopedic clinic not affiliated with theirs. I did not like that either. I do not think that it is unreasonable to believe that sometimes a Dr. & patient do not click for some reason and that switching Drs in the same office would be preferable to the patient taking their business elsewhere. I guess Dr. Smith was told that I wanted someone different so he pawned me off on his assistant which was great since his assistant was much better to deal with. He was much more willing to give me something for the pain. I was so grateful to him at the time because I was in a lot of pain & Dr. Smith was so stingy with the meds. I have never liked taking pain medication but I had an infant at the time & needed to be able to care for her since my husband worked very long hours & could not help much. I ended up not taking all of the pain medication but it was nice knowing it was available. Dr. Smith had me thinking that I was just going to have to suffer. If I ever need an orthopedist again I will be sure to look for someone else. Pros: The assistant was nice to deal with more
