The View
Travel 25 miles north and a hundred years back in time to discover this tucked-away village, where the trees seem greener and taller than any in Central Park. Tour the town landmarks--the Old Dutch Church, Washington Irving's grave, the Sleepy Hollow Bridge (known to locals as the Headless Horseman bridge)--and trace the path of Ichabod Crane's fearful flight.
Set the Stage
Before you go, read Irving's classic with or to your kids. Teen cinephiles may relish screen icons Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci's retelling of the story. As you wander around the town, you'll spot sites made famous by the original story, as well as locations immortalized in Tim Burton's film.
Recreate!
Use Sleepy Hollow as a base for day-trips in the great outdoors--there's horseback-riding, plenty of hiking (arduous and easy), fishing, mountain-biking and boating. And after your exertions, enjoy a simple supper in town, or repair to the Philipsburg Manor, a 300-year-old working farm and gristmill serving 18th-century fare on many Saturday nights (best to book ahead).
