Not great, not even really good. Maybe average? 11/7/2010

After having heard much about the 'amazing' Greek food that was a must have, my boyfriend & I were eager to give it a try. We went armed with a gift certificate from restaurant dot com (which, unfortunately in this case, meant our server got an automatic 18% gratuity). To start with, the service was terrible. Had it been busy, I'd have understood having to flag my waitress a time or two. Buuuut it wasn't busy at all, and even when she was standing at our table, we had to remind her to fill our glasses. At one point, after having been reminded to fill our glasses, she walked off with my boyfriend's glass, and then she forgot to bring it back for about 10 minutes. We tried to flag her about it, but she wasn't paying attention at all. On to the food. We went entirely Greek for this visit, so I can only speak to the quality of that portion of the menu. For an appetizer, we had the combo, which included dolmas, keftedakia, spanikopita, tiropita, hummus, tzatziki, & pita. The dolmas filling was excellent, however EVERY grape leaf was fibrous & stemmy. Having eaten a fair share in my day, this was the first time I'd encountered such consistently bad grape leaves. The keftedakia were very tasty, but cold when they came out. Tiropita was tasty, but the spanikopita left something to be desired. Hummus was hummus, and the tzatziki was ok. For the meal, I had the gyro sandwich, which I feel is the one thing every Greek restaurant must be judged by. I have to say, I was excited when I saw it came with an extra large dollop of tzatziki, but that was about as far as my excitement for the gyro went. It was average, at best. As a side, I had lemon potatoes, which were good. Boyfriend had the combo platter, and he was really looking forward to the moussaka. The plate also had spatstitsio, dolmas, tiropita, spanikopita, & a Greek salad. Both the moussaka & spatstitsio were overpoweringly flavored by the nutmeg, which I assume was in the béchamel sauce used in both. We certainly understand nutmeg is a key ingredient for a good béchamel, however this was very overpowering. If you got past that flavor, though, both were, again, average at best. All remaining items, which we'd had on the appetizer, were the same. The waitress told us that all the Greek selections were made at home, in who I assume is the owner's wife's kitchen, so we were really expecting a lot more from the food, since it wasn't being cranked out in industrial sized portions...but we didn't get much out of the place. Perhaps visiting for breakfast or some American style meals would be ok, but if you're looking for life changing (or even just good) Greek food, don't look here. We've had better from chain restaurants. If you're in the area & wanting Greek, go an extra half mile down the road to Bakkhus Taverna, right by the boardwalk (THAT'S some life changing Greek food). more

Fantastic Clear Lake Breakfast Spot 4/12/2010

If you’re looking for a good Clear Lake restaurant with a traditional diner breakfast, then Skipper's should be your destination. You know you’ve found it when you see the line of golf carts parked outside from the Clear Lake Shores locals. Along with a fantastic breakfast menu, you’ll notice Skipper himself making the rounds to greet the regulars while filling empty coffee cups. It’s a stone’s throw from the Kemah Boardwalk, but offers much better food than the chain breakfast spots nearby. On Saturday mornings, you can stop by the local farmer’s market next door after you have your fill of eggs and bacon. Highly recommended! Pros: Breakfast, Friendly service more

Smoke no longer a problem!!! 4/23/2008

Great news!! I went into Skipper's last Saturday and they are now non smoking throughout the entire restaurant on Saturday and Sunday Mornings. more

Best Breakfast in the Area 3/23/2008

Smokey in the front, but OK in the back. We go for breakfast once a week and it is the best. The Greek salads are very good. Did not care for the seafood. I have had nothing but good service. This is a little dive cafe where all the boaters go. I do not know how they give you so much quality food for so little. Pros: Good food- Good price. Perfect for what it is Cons: Too smokey if you have to wait, but service is fast, and they can usually get you to the back quickly more

Doesn't deserve its cult status 3/2/2007

Only been for breakfast. Like the other reviewer, its like a smoky Dennys. My eggs were undercooked and COLD. The owner is a grouch. I have tried to be friendly and he is completely non-responsive. I keep hoping to find a breakfast place like the old Kettle that used to be where Ichiban's is now. That was a great neighborhood breakfast spot. Does anybody else remember? Pros: I'm thinking Cons: Service, Food, Ambiance more

Smokey but not the meat. 2/24/2007

Stopped for lunch, but had breakfast. Many friends had bragged about the breakfast you get at Skippers. Did not find it anything to write home about, comparable with Denny's. Service was good but the place reeked with the smell of cigarette smoke yet no one there at the time was smoking. I must say I had that smell linger with me all day, could not get past it an I'm a former smoker... If you are a non smoker the experience is not worth the opportunity. Will say the menu prices are very good. Pros: Food OK Cons: Smoke smell is terrible more

Breakfast served any time of day 7/11/2006

The food here is always good, served hot and with a smile on the waitress' face. Anytime you want breakfast, Skipper's is the place to go. more

not good at any kind of cuisine! 6/30/2006

Make up your mind people....american? Italian? Greek?\r Once you decide then get a decent cook that specializes in that cuisine. For Gosh sake.....your food stinks and the arrogant inexperienced, class-less waitstaff make you look even worse. Is the owner of this place even in town? Does he know what's going on over there?\r Forget flashing the OOOPAH on your street sign until you can produce some authentic and delicious greek dishes and desserts. And find some waitstaff with a little class. more

Greek Food at its best!!! 4/15/2005

Very enjoyable dining experience. The food was well prepared and more then generous portions were served. The Greek appetizer platter was a meal in itself and the eggplant, cucumber and caviar sauces were beyond compare to what I have eatten elsewhere. The waiter was very courteous and knowledgeable of the food being served. Overall is was an enjoyable dining experienced that exceeded me and my wifes expectations. I would recommend this Cafe to anyone that loves Greek food. Pros: Inexpensive, Excellent Food, Generous Portions more
