When I was visiting New Haven, my friends suggested Italian. I'm from Boston and loyal to food in the city's Italian district, the North End, so I wasn't expecting to be blown away. I was wrong. I know it's a strong statement, but I stand by it: Skappo puts Boston's North End to shame.
The food was unbelievable - every dish. It went well beyond what one might think Italian food is. It was creative, elegant, light, flavorful... They used high end ingredients and didn't charge much for them. Attention was paid not only to flavor, but to texture and presentation as well.
The restaurant itself is small, quaint, and personal, and the staff was friendly and conversational. It has the feel of being family owned, indeed, the servers all seemed to be siblings and mama is in the kitchen making it all happen.
Sharing three courses and a bottle of wine, the total tab was about $25/person. I can't remember the last time I paid so little for such high quality.
Overall a fantastic experience. I look forward to coming back anytime I'm even remotely near New Haven.
