Sinai Hospital 8/3/2005

You don't always get to choose a hospital. Most people I know, when they need emergency care, go to the closest one. When my father had a heart attack he wasn't at home, so he ended up at Sinai Hospital (not necessarily the closest to where he was, but the closest that could provide the emergency medical care he needed). Over the next four months, my family learned a lot about this hospital. In those four months, my father was in four different wards and had I don't even remember how many surgeries. The first was an emergency quadruple bypass--obviously a success since he ended up at the hospital for four months. He also had several GI surgeries and surgery to put in (and later remove) a trache tube. It's hard to review a hospital because there are so many factors involved. Overall, we were impressed. The facility was nice, parking was tight but not impossible (depending on the time of day) and everyone from the parking attendant to the nursing assistants were friendly and understanding. I was especially impressed with all of the cardiac-related nursing staff--these women and men went out of their way all the time to keep my father on the road to good health. I can't say the same for the nursing staff in the general recovery area--they were slow to respond, didn't anticipate needs, and in one really bad instance the nurse on duty did nothing at all in the 12 hours after he had feeding tube surgery. She even refused him pain medication and refused to call his surgeon to ask about options for pain relief. The therapy services staff was also just bad. He was supposed to receive speech/swallowing therapy and physical therapy and the therapists rarely showed up. The speech therapist refused point blank to provide the swallowing therapy he needed to get him off the feeding tube--this was the cause for his four-month stay. Overall, I would recommend Sinai. They got my father through a near-fatal heart attack and you can't argue with success like that. But if you are there, stay on top of everyone--ask questions and make sure you are getting the treatment you need. Don't be afraid to lodge official complaints--it seems to be the only way to get things done at time. more
