If you are looking for a genuine 19th century experience, this is the place to go. There is nothing trite or touristy about it! The rooms are very clean and well kept. Pride of ownership abounds. We stayed in room 25 which overlooks ""B"" st. We had a great view of Pipers Opera house and the old miners union hall. In the room everything works from the transoms above the doors to the huge windows. There are no ""Keep off the grass"" signs, if you know what I mean. From the moment you enter, you are truly transported back to the 1870's. Although the lighting is electric, it is subdued and very reminiscent of gas light. The architecture is amazing. I must warn you that as wonderful of an experience we had, the hotel might not be for everyone. The only modern amenities are electricity and indoor plumbing. That means no elevator, phones, internet etc. Also, we were unable to get a cell phone signal from the room. The beds were very comfortable, but the room was just a little chilly. There was a portable heater but the bed could have used a couple of more blankets. However, we were there in the off season. We thought that this added to the authenticity. Any one needing ADA access will need to book a room on the 2nd floor and enter from ""B""st. The stairs are very steep and the hallway is narrow on the 3rd floor. Parents with young children will need to watch them closely-no running up and down the stairs. Remember the building is over 130 years old and there were not a lot of safety features built into the architecture. These points are not a complaint at all; they are just a caution that the Silver Queen is the real deal and must be treated as so.
