Mediocre Food, Nauseating Conditions 8/31/2011

This place is terrible, it's that simple. I'm pretty forgiving, but lines have been crossed. The atmosphere is nice, and the staff is friendly, I can't fault them for anything. For what it is the prices are alright as well. The food is mediocre at best. It's the worst I've eaten at in Virginia Beach, but there are a lot of little hole in the wall places I've never tried. It's greasy and fatty, even for Asian, and they skimp on the seasoning, badly. The sanitation is what's really an atrocity. The fact that the health department hasn't shut them down can only be attributed to incompetence or bribery. The floors were so dirty that there piles of filth built up around the benches and the hibachi. The counters and tables were so sticky that the one time I touched one it left my hand sticky and I had to go wash before I ate. I am not confident that the plates had been washed with actual soap, I think they may have just been wiped off with a damp cloth. I actually watched our chef shove one of his utensils into the garbage chute to pack down overflowing food garbage from at least the past several days, and then put the same utensil back into my food. I would have walked out at that point if it wouldn't have offended the people who invited us. This is the second time I've visited Shogun, having been invited by friends of the family, and these conditions have not changed since last time. The first time we visited, to top off an evening that really gave me the willies, there was vomit on the bathroom floor and the drain in the floor was clogged. On this second visit, it was urine instead. In short, I will not be going back. If you want Hibachi and an entertaining show as your food is prepared, go to Otani's. May you find what you seek, Landra more

Not bad on the show... average on the food 2/11/2007

Nice decor and well designed out. The show is medicore the several times that I have been at lunches or dinners. Seems a a bit pricey for the quality of food and ambience. Their Teppanyaki is definitely the focus -minimal on the sushi. Pros: Ambience for group fun Cons: Average food more

Shogun Has The Best Sushi in Town 3/28/2006

After having tried most of the sushi restaurants in the beach and Norfolk, Shogun has my vote hands down. The only restaurant remotely comprable is Momo's, which at one point had Shogun employee's working there as well. Shogun's staff makes the experience far superior to that of others, regardless of if you are getting something to go or dining in. more

Consistently Over Rated! 1/28/2003

Not a bad place, but DEFINITELY not one of the "best of the beach" regardless of constantly being voted that. Sushi is mediocre at best. What Shogun has going for it is atmosphere-- it is exactly what someone not very familiar with/ comfortable with Japanese food wants-- the requisite "set pieces" in the decor, the whole teppanyaki show, a very simplified menu. Its "exotic" for suburbia and that has its audience-- but for really great Japanese food look elsewhere! Pros: friendly, nonthreatening, plenty of parking Cons: predictable, nonthreatening, expensive more

Hot Steak and Cool Sushi 11/9/2002

The best Steak House in Virginia Beach, American style or Japanese. Great Tepan Chefs prepare the food right in front of your eyes with elegant style. Try the Filet Migon with Shrimp. Save your money and get the free white rice instead of the fried rice which you pay an extra dollar for. Has a great Sushi Bar to boot. Pros: Cute Korean Waitress', Good Parking, Reasonable Food Price Cons: Expensive Drinks, Extra for Fried Rice more

Editorial
  • The Scene
Slit curtains separate four cozy dining sections. Inside the simply decorated, dimly lit and somewhat noisy rooms, globular paper lanterns and traditional Japanese paintings lend a touch of authenticity. Customers can sit Eastern-style on floor mats or on traditional wooden chairs, depending on their preference. The real art emerges as the food is prepared: An entertaining chef cuts and cooks the entrees right before your eyes.

    The Food
The only way to get fresher food is to steam it in the grocery's produce section. Ingredients are cooked to exact specifications; steaks, chicken and lobster are filleted then fried inches from your face. While watching zucchini and mushrooms simmering in harmony with your meat of choice, you may sample some tender hearty sushi-including a particularly flavorful yellowtail-or munch on a salad topped with a tangy homemade ginger dressing. A light mushroom and onion soup also effectively whets the appetite without lessening it.
