so authentic it made my japanese friends cry happy tears! 1/3/2011

first i must say don't listen to those one star reviews. they are from before the miles road restaurant was even open! so they must be for a different restaurant. this is my husband's and my favorite restaurant. it is simply amazing. we went to japan for 3 weeks for our honeymoon, and this restaurant is PERFECT for our authentic japanese food cravings! the service has always been wonderful, and everyone there is so kind. when i took my friends from japan there, they teared-up because the taste reminded them so much of home. THAT'S how authentic it is! the sushi, entrees, everything is just so amazing. you must go! more

Excellent Sushi - Great Atmosphere 7/28/2010

I've regularly had exclusively alacarte sushi from Shinano since I discovered them, and it's been amazing - fresh fish, perfectly prepared, and excellent customer service. My only complaint is that I've only heard of them word-of-mouth. This is an exemplary restaurant with an extremely seasoned chef - the restaurant should be much more well-known. Pros: Authentic, fresh sushi, excellent customer service Cons: Not open for lunch 7 days/week, needs more publicity more

Better than before 5/24/2010

After waiting several months for the reopening in Solon, I have been there several times. The menu is virtually unchanged, but the quality is even better (if possible). The fish selection is sometimes limited at the sushi bar, but the quality of what they have is superb. The hamachi melts in your mouth, the saba is perfectly seasoned, and the fresh salmon is excellent (just a hint of saltiness). The sushi rice is also perfect, just enough vinegar, sugar, and salt to enhance the fish/vegetable component, NOT overwhelm. From the kitchen; the tempura is awesome as are the fried mussels, sauteed shitake mushrooms, the yakinasu (eggplant), and the seafood combo...and the grilled squid is still myfavorite appetizer, ANYWHERE!! I love this place Pros: Great Food, ample parking, beautiful dining room more

Best sushi in town!!! 2/10/2009

If you really want authentic Japanese food with a family friendly atmosphere , you have to check it out! Once you do, you will come back again & again. Pros: authentic delicious Cons: i have no negatives more

Back and Better! 1/1/2009

Just wanted everyone to know that Shinano's is opening back up in Solon, OH on Miles at 28500 Miles Road. Call to make reservations! (440-498-1614) ALSO, those concerned about fresh fish, most sushi restaurants use frozen fish. or "not fresh" fish. clearly its difficult to keep absolute fresh fish in OH. But it is all safe and there shouldn't be any concerns with this restaurant. the menu also offers a wide variety of authentic japanese dishes! MORE THAN JUST SUSHI! Pros: new place more

Loved this restaurant 11/12/2008

Loved this restaurant. Can't believe it closed. My wife and I had our first date there more than 18 years ago. Thanks for all the great meals over the years. Cons: Closed more

As authentic as I've seen in NE Ohio 2/21/2008

I've lived in Japan for six years, and lived among Japanese Americans for far longer. I know authentic. After some truly terrifying ethnic food experiences around here, this place almost had me weep tears of joy. The menu was the most authentic I've seen in the area (N.B., you will not find either a "volcano roll" or a "California roll" in most sushi places in Japan), and the food did not disappoint. The little gift shop, complete with Japanese American crane mobiles, reminded me of Little Tokyo (L.A.). I usually get the saba shioyaki (broiled mackerel). The ginger pork, nabeyaki udon (thick white noodles with vegetables in an iron pot), and ramen (real ramen, not the instant stuff) are also very good. They even have ramune (Japanese soda served in a distinctive glass bottle sealed with a marble). These folks know and care about Japanese food. Their new location in Solon is also quite nice. They have big windows that let in lots of light, and the decor is both authentic and tastefully light. You can find better Japanese food in bigger U.S. cities, but for Cleveland, this is about as good as it gets. Good enough for me to trek back next time I'm hankering for Japanese food. Pros: Authenticity, relatively tasteful decor Cons: Somewhat isolated location more

Nice Place to Dine 10/16/2007

Staying in Lake County, read the very mixed reviews, tried it out. I had heard other things about this place, mostly good, so I made the drive. I'm glad I did, more than once. I think this place is great. Although the fish selection was a bit limited, the quality was superb. The hamachi melted in my mouth it was so rich and the fresh salmon was also very good. The scallops were sweet and tender and the saba was seasoned with the perfect amount of salt and vinegar. The sushi rice was perfect not too sweet, salty, or sour. The food from the kitchen was exceptional as well. The presentation was simple yet well done, not OVER done or elaborate. We tried the vegetable gyoza, beef negimayaki, squid steak, and the crab cakes. All were excellent. The Japanese noodle were a real treat. Liked the kakiyage (sp?) udon and really like the soba noodles with tempura. The teriyaki seafood skewers and teriyaki steak were outstanding. You can tell this sauce did not come out of a bottle, they put time and effort into making it. The tempura was light and crispy like real Japanese tempura should be...(many places label anything they batter fry as tempura, which is quite disheartenng). Overall this is a great palce for dinner. The food is very well prepared, the prices are reasonable,(yes I know sushi/sashimi can get pricey if you overdo it), and the atmosphere is comfortable,(the people are nice). more

Can't Recommend It-Sushi lover, please read! 8/2/2007

I used to be a frequest goer of this restaurant. Certainly this restaurant provides most authentic Japanese Menu in town until one day I run into one of their former server. She (can't mention her name) told me that she will never recommend anyone eating Sushi there because the fish they use is not fresh. It may be ok if they are cooked but to eat it raw...she said she can't recommend anybody eating the Sushi there. Since then, I stopped going there. It kind of disgusting to me that they serve their customer any thing less than the best, especially something like Sushi. Come to think of it, one of the owner, her attitude always seemed so arrogant for their own good. I think she needs to realize they are far from being a 5 star restaurant. Go somewhere else to eat Sushi. One of the place I really recommend for eating Sushi and authentic Japanese food is a restaurant in Columbus, Ohio. The name of the restaurant is "Restaurant Japan". I know it's 2&1/2 hour drive from Cleveland area but if you are ever in Columbus area, it is worth checking it out. Pros: Authenticity Cons: Fish not fresh for Sushi more

Best Around 4/2/2006

Sushi is great, the rice is cooked and seasoned perfectly (sushi IS rice). Sashimi is always good and the Sushi chefs are very knowledgeable. Loved the Steak Shinano and the Shrimp Shinano as well as the beef negimayaki. The raw oysters were great, loved the sauce. Try the sukiyaki with beef, fantastic. I'm NOT a vegetarian, but I really enjoyed the grilled tofu, hiya yako(cold tofu) and the eggplant appetizers. Service is always friendly and efficient. Pros: good food, good service, ample parking Cons: n/a more

Best Japanese Food in Cleveland 3/30/2006

Shinano has no competitors when it comes to authentic tasting Japanese food in Cleveland. I wouldn't want to be caught at the other ones. We try other Japanese restaurants when we hear one has opened, but always return to Shinano. We always order the Volcano Roll (crabstick and avocado topped with scallop, octopus, tobiko & mayonnaise -- heavenly!) and a random maki that we happen to be in the mood for. My husband loves their sukiyaki and never deviates. I love their salmon teriyaki teishoku, tendon, unajyu, tanuki udon, I could go on... The bean sprout side and salad dressing are wonderful, too! Another great thing about this place is that you can order Japanese food that is not on the menu. I've gone to a few "Japanese" restaurants where I was unable to order something as simple as gyudon because the kitchen didn't know what it was. Pros: Authentic, Excellent service, Great value more

Overpriced Lunch Sushi Not Fresh 2/8/2006

We received very small portions, 4 pieces of Nigiri, sushi was not fresh, and two pieces of stale california role 6 pieces all together for $8.95. Waitress did not specify only 6 pieces, and no salad. My lunch mate's chicken teriyaki was awful. Worst Japanese lunch ever! We left hungry and in shock, could not believe we spent $27 for NOTHING! Been eating Japanese Food since 1987. Cons: Tiny Portions, Sushi Not Fresh more

Always a great experience 12/21/2005

We have been coming here for years. This is the best traditional Japanese restaurant in the Cleveland area. The sushi is great, but the noodle dishes are wonderful. Always friendly service, quiet atomosphere and great food. Never had a problem. Can't ask for much else. Pros: Sushi variety, quality, service more

nice and more 3/28/2005

very low key and relaxing. great sashimi and sushi. authentic Japanese noodles also very good. their grilled squid app is fantastic. wish they had a better selection of cold sake. try some (cold sake) with salmon or smelt roe or some uni...awesome. if you like a loud, bustling, 'cosmopolitan,' atmoshere,(with rude patrons) then this is not for you. if you like good japanese cuisine in a down to earth atmoshere you will love this place. Addition: 7/29/08, I heard they closed and was really bummed, but found out recently that they are (re) opening soon in Solon, Ohio. Yeah!!!! 6/15/09- They have opened (about 61/2 months) and they didn't miss a beat. The quality of the food is still awesome..if any change it is probably better. The fried mussels and the pan sauteed shiitake mushrooms were simply fantastic. Better wine selection now. Pros: great food, friendly service, ample parking more

fantastic 3/28/2005

Very comfortable and serene. Friendly down to earth atmosphere. Good sushi and sashimi and great appetizers. Loved the ika maruyaki, the tempura squid legs, and the oysters(fried or on half shell). Authentic Japanese noodles are excellent. The curry special with tonkatsu (fried pork cutlet) was awesome! I tried to visit this place recently; I found they had closed. I was kinda upset. But, GREAT news... I heard they are reopening in the Shops of North Solon in the Fall (2008). Edit: Yes, they have reopened and the food and service are still great. A few minor changes to the menu but basically the same (99.9%). Steak Shinano...SUPER!! And the grilled squid is still one of the best items offered on ANY menu at ANY restaurant. Pros: food, sincere service, good parking Cons: color of sign, close too early more
