Do not use this clinic if you value your health! 7/24/2009

I had been a patient at RWG for about 3 years when I went in for a routine exam. I had been experiencing some symptoms of a urinary tract infection, so I decided to get it checked out. Every time you visit the office you have to fill out a form describing your current health and reason for the visit, so I listed "possible UTI" as one of the reasons. When I was taken back to the exam area the medical assistant told me that there had been an emergency that morning and that things around the office were "a little crazy". She looked at my form, asked me about my symptoms, and asked me to leave a urine sample. After leaving the sample, I went into the exam room and met with Wendy. While having my exam I discussed my ongoing endometriosis, which was of more serious concern to me at that time. As I was paying my bill at the front desk, I remembered that I had forgotten to ask Wendy when the office would get back to me about the urine test, so I asked the receptionist and she responded "usually in a few days". I went home, and over the next few days my symptoms began to worsen. Three days later I was experiencing aches, nausea, excruciating burning, and severe pain from the swollen bladder that was putting pressure on areas of endometriosis. That night, I called a nurse from another clinic because RWG does not have a 24-hour nurse line, and she advised me to call the clinic in the morning to ask if they had received the results of my test. I called the RWG nurse line at open of business the next day, and was informed that no urine test had been sent out. I had to drive back to the clinic (about 15 miles away from my home) to have another test. While at the office, I asked why my test had never been sent, and I was told that it was my responsibility to tell Wendy that my urine needed to be tested for a UTI, and that because no order had been sent, the sample was thrown away without testing. What does she mean I didn't tell them??? I wrote it on the form, talked to the medical assistant about it, and left a sample. It was my understanding that there is usually some type of communication between a practitioner and their staff. When I mentioned to Wendy that I had indicated on my intake form that I was having symptoms of a UTI, she told me that she is sometimes too busy to read the form. Oh my God! What if I had listed some symptom that I thought was benign but indicated a serious health problem? I'm so lucky I finally called the outside nurse and did not wind up in the hospital with a kidney infection. I went out and found a new gynecologist that day. Do not ever use this clinic! Pros: nice facility Cons: long wait times and incompetence more

Not attentive to serious women's health issues 9/16/2008

I have been a patient of the RWG for ~ 5 years and am finally switching to a new ob/gyn after a recent incident involving the nursing staff. My complaints for this group range from never being able to get in to see the doctor, the entire practice dropping all Blue Cross/Blue Shield patients without notice, then negotiating a last-minute deal with BCBS and picking us all back up again to dirty waiting rooms and rude receptionist staff. I have finally decided to find another doctor after giving this practice repeated "2nd chances" to improve. I suffer from a severe case of endometriosis - the leading cause of infertility among women, a disease that afflicts 1 out of 10 women in this country - a top ten women's health issue. As a result of my severe endometriosis, I recently endured over 8 hours of crippling menstrual cramps that had me screaming, crying and writhing on the floor in pain. When I was finally able to get out of bed (or off the floor), I placed a call to my ob/gyn asking if someone should check me out. I was first told to call back after 9 because the nurses won't take calls before that time. I was then told, by a nurse, to just "come back in if it happens again." I specifically told her that I'm an endometriosis patient - she said there was nothing they could do. This is an unacceptable answer from a physicians group, housed in a building dedicated to women's health. So the bottom line is - if you have no gynecologically complicated health issues - just need routine paps every year and don't care who you see - this office will probably work out fine for you, but if you truly need attentive women's care - look elsewhere. Pros: Building is nice. Cons: Non-physician staff don't care about women's health. more
