Rice University is home to the Shepherd School of Music. The Shepherd School educates graduate students who go on to perform in the great symphony orchestras of the world. As they learn and perfect their disciplines they put on concerts on the campus of Rice where the general public are free to come and enjoy classical and modern orchestral works of every kind. Chamber orchestras and large symphonic works are all parts of the whole. The concert halls are exceptional and the attire is always casual. These concerts are almost always free as well. Afterward you can enjoy 75 cent beers at Valhalla, the only non-profit bar I have ever heard of. Students and visitors go there to imbibe and unwind.
