I'm very sad reading a couple of poorly written and negative reviews here, and even wonder if they are genuine. I myself regularly use Shelmar kennels for training and boarding our current 4 dogs. For the last 5 years we have had nothing but rewarding and positive experiences, whether that's leaving our dogs while we take our winter break or to train our new puppies. Our dogs love Shelmar, and this shows when they get out of our car and see Martin, It's pure excitement. Martin will always spend time with us to show us how he trains them, for us to use at home. \r \r Martin is also the 2008 National Cocker Championship winner in Montana, and when we see him next will congratulate. - Well done Martin!\r \r As for the training itself someone here mentioned that he 'slaps the dogs across the face' - what a load of garbage! I personally have been there whilst he trains and in no case has he ever done this, in-fact he is against using force on any animal unlike other trainers I have seen. He respects his dogs, and he treats our dogs like his own. I feel safe knowing that our dogs are in good hands when we leave them with him.\r \r One thing to remember is that if Shelmar is fully booked it's for a reason! I would advise booking in advance and not expecting to get your dog in the same day!, If they were not good at what they do they would be empty and out of business, certainly not fully booked and winning National championships! \r \r My advise is to go see Martin and Shelly for yourselves, make an appointment and see the facilities for yourselves! \r \r Karl Pros: Excellent facilities and kennels, Advice. This posting is a warning to anyone considering leaving an animal at Shelmar Kennels. It describes my deplorable treatment by Martin Bell, the owner of Shelmar Kennels. \r \r I left my dog at Shelmar Kennels in August 2008 for obedience training and rehabilitation from dog-aggression issues. The cost of this four-week training was $1,200. Two days later, I emailed Mr. Bell to ask a few follow-up questions regarding the methods he uses to correct a dog?s behavior. He called me and reprimanded me for not having asked the questions while I was there, insinuated that I was one of those ?crazy dog park women,? and suggested that I come get my dog because he didn?t want to deal with me. He also told me that he had shown me the correction method he uses, which involves a choke collar and leash. I learned later, when I picked up the dog, that a second correction he used that he didn?t tell me about was slapping the dog across the face with force. Despite Mr. Bell?s confrontational attitude, I declined to pick up my dog because I was in desperate need of help for my pet. The phone call ended with me feeling that I had to grovel for Mr. Bell to keep the animal and train it. \r \r When the dog was ready to come home, Mr. Bell spent three poorly used hours instructing me on how to work with the dog when I brought him home. During this time, Mr. Bell was insulting, condescending, and overbearing. He told me to ?not say another word? because he didn?t want to hear what I had to say. He also said ?you?re just making excuses ? you really don?t want to do this? as well as ?I showed you how to do this and you?ve tried it two times already. You get one more chance to do it right.? His overall demeanor was one of superiority and contempt.\r \r He clearly didn?t care at all about providing any kind of customer service. He told me outright that my opinion of him didn?t matter. His abusive behavior was completely unacceptable of anyone who is offering a service. more

We have been taking our dogs to Shelmar Kennels to board for the past three years. My husband and I travel for work a lot, our dogs spend every third week in boarding, they are equally as happy at Shelmar or at home, we call it their 'country residence'!! We have used several kennels in the past but the care and attention given to our pets is evident in their demeanour when they see Martin and Shelly.\r Martin and Shelly own and run the kennel, so you know who will be looking after your dog when you get there. We get onto their road and our dogs get sooooo excited.\r Pros: Owners care for your dogs, they have tons of training experience and deal with all breeds, their place is beautiful, a one acre lake fully fenced and the dogs can play and play! more

I was looking for a nice place to board our dog for a couple of days and Shelmar looked reputable. I was unable to reach them by phone for three days and left messages for them to call me but they never returned my calls. My family and I gave them the benefit of the doubt and drove 15 miles to look at the place and get some questions answered. A guy came out and asked me ""who sent me"", I told him I sent myself because they wouldn't return there calls and I was trying to give them my business. He told me they were booked until Christmas 2008, before that I had already decided we wouldn't be taking our dog there and would let everyone not to either. Very rude, save your time and money by going somewhere else for dog boarding and training!!!!! more
