My wife and I were previously members at Shawnee Fitness and were less than impressed. What you pay for in this gym is not what you get. \r

The set up – this gym is set up in a manner where the cardio equipment is upstairs and overlooks the floor where the weight equipment is. For some reason they decided to put the spinning bikes in the middle of the cardio equipment, so on most mornings or afternoons if you are on the step machine, treadmills or EFX’s, you can’t hear the tv over the person instructing the classes shouting. They did have a microphone/headphone system that was supposed to eliminate that, but most of the members don’t use it and I don’t blame them as it looks uncomfortable. There is also a track around the outside of top section, but this can rarely be used as there are often classes who use it or they have children in their child care running around it. Additionally for some of the fans, the outlets are in the yoga room for some reason so if you want to turn on certain fans you often have to interrupt a class. Fans are often necessary as the gym does not regulate the temperature very well and in the summer the gym is often warm and muggy. In the winter dress warm as its often a bit chilly.\r
Equipment – The weight lifting equipment itself is fine, not bad but not great. Its very similar to 24 hr fitness equipment. They seem to spend a lot of money on buying random Jersey’s and plazma tvs for the downstairs where the weights are rather than buying new equipment or buying new tvs. The cardio area has the 4 channel plug in system. Unfortunately they primarily have old small tv’s so its hard to see at times and the plug in equipment is often not functioning. There is one plasma tv, which is working only about 80% of the time and rather than spend money fixing that or getting new nicer tv’s they continue to by new random sports memorabilia. \r
Classes – We never attended the spinning class as for the aforementioned reasons it just never seemed like it would seem normal. For their aerobic classes, it seems as though they are fine, though if you are not in them be prepared to be annoyed as they are doing various things through the cardio region and steps to them. The mind/body classes were okay thought it’s a carpeted area which seems odd. \r
Child care – This is not a place you want to send your kids. Basically they have a room where kids go and the people taking care of the kids seem less than qualified. Often times they take the kids and have them run around the track which is somewhat annoying to others and I personally do not want my kids out doing that. \r
Customer Service – The owner is one of the least friendly people I have encountered in my time living in Kansas. Other than him, the people in general are nice at the gym but seem somewhat clueless. We are still having issues with our cancellation of our membership as nobody would communicate with us when we wanted to cancel so we got the wrong message. We spent 3 days trying to corroborate the info we were given and finally got a call back from a manager who contradicted what we were previously told.\r

The primary pro with this gym is the location if you live in western Shawnee and the equipment is not bad. But with all the cons mentioned above, I would go to any other number of local gyms and probably even be able to pay less to do so!
