Fried Cheese????? 12/25/2009

Do you love cheese? Come in an try the Glens fried cheese with a grilled English Muffin. Do you love cole slaw well I think the Glen's is the best. When I am passing through or visiting CT my vehicle takes me to the Glen. I've eaten here 100's of times and not once had a bad expierence. I'm a big fan of their breakfast, good coffee, bacon, egg, fried cheese and a grilled english muffin. No better way to start the day for this large mammal. Pros: Good Food, Friendly Staff, Nostalgic atmosphere Cons: not open 24/7 more

Incredible Fried Cheese Hamburgers. 9/5/2009

I love this restaurant, ice-cream shop, and the late 60's decor. It is a unique and fun place to have a meal or just ice-ream! All the employees are kind and friendly! I had never heard of fried cheese so I tried it, the hamburgers are the best as they are but the fried cheese on them tops the scale! I take guests (family & friends) from out of town to Shady Glen because it is such a unique restaurant, all have loved it! Enjoy, and I know you will! Pros: I rate these at 10+ Ambiance,hamburgers,etc,, & Service Cons: There aren't any cons for this 50's styl;e restaurant!(^-^) more

Best comfort food around 8/17/2007

I've been eating at The Glen for well over 50 years off and on. I would be there more if I still lived in the area. But believe me it is a stop I always make when I'm near Manchester. The Cheeseburger is a Master piece. The Ice cream superb. I even bring people from other states with me and they can't wait to get back. Even the setting is great. Pros: Comfortable, a trip into nostalgia land, food is good and friendly service Cons: I live far away now more

Can't go wrong with Shady Glen!! 7/25/2007

I love this place. Ever since I was a kid I remember eating here. Every time I go there I must order the same things. Cheese Burger(so good with the cheese cooked on the grill and stiff enough to hold up the bun), Side order cheese grilled, milk shake, and the very best onion rings. Oh and the pickles are really good too. To top it off have some butter crunch or grape nut ice cream. Yum!! Pros: Atmosphere, good food, great service!! more

Cheeseburger 10/14/2006

Shady Glen opened in 1948. That was when my family started eating there. I have lived in every section of this contry and have eaten some excellent cheeseburgers. Hwoever, none compare with Shady Glen's. Sure, they cost a little more but, if you want excellent tasting food, excellent service, a clean restaurant and clean-cut employees - this is the best. At Shady Glen, you can eat your heart out. And, the ice cream is great, too. more

I grew up in manchester until i was 10 and go back every so often to see family and this place is exactly the same as it was when i was a kid. The best cheeseburgers in the world (with the cheese crispy hanging off the sides) how do they do it?! They now have lobster rolls which are to die for, and you have to have icecream or a shake. Can't even pick a favorite flavor because they are all good!!! more

One of My Favorite Restaurants 12/27/2005

When I was a child in the 1950s our family stayed with my grandparents during the summer in Manchester and as a special treat every now and then we would go to Shady Glen. Now, in my mid-50s, I still make it a point to eat here whenever I am in the vicinity, which unfortunately is not very often. Going into this restaurant is like entering a time machine. The food, especially the wonderful and unique cheeseburgers, is the same as I remembered it from 50 years ago. The atmosphere hasn't changed either, and the service and ambiance is simply wonderful. This is really a great place. more

The Best Old Time Family Restaurant 11/21/2005

A fantastic family restaurant, the food is always fresh and the setting always clean. A fantastic place to take you children and grandchildren to. Home made ice cream, the beat and most unique cheeseburgers around. The prices are higher than other restaurants in the same category, but the extra money you pay is well worth all the added bonuses of eating at such a fine restaurant. Simply Amazing 7/21/2005

Anyone who has ever tasted a Shady Glen Burger will fall instantly in love. Personally, I hate cheeseburgers as I never found them very, well, varied. However, the burgers at Shady Glen, as the title suggests, are simply amazing. They're big, juicy, and the cheese is wonderful. Plus, they give you a variety of condiments to put on your burger the way you want it (I.E. onions, mustard, ketchup, and relish). And, I can't leave out the ice cream! The pumpkin sundae is my favorite, however, I also love the peanut butter sundae. For my boyfriend and I to both eat there, having two burgers, onion rings, fries, two sodas, and two sundaes, it is about $20...what a bargin! Overall, Shady Glen is fabulous! And I don't know about this hokey puck Mcdonald's business--clearly the author of that review is crazy (or works at one of Shady Glen's competitors)!!! Pros: Burgers, Ice cream, staff more

If you haven't been to Shady Glen, get in the car right now and go. Wonderful, unique burgers and ice cream made right on the premises. You won't find a burger like it anywhere else and some think the ice cream is even better than the burger. A review really can't capture it, just go. more

We Drive 1 1/2 Hrs for a Shady Glen Cheeseburger! 3/15/2005

I live in North Central Massachusetts but my family and I drive to Manchester for Shady Glen's cheeseburgers! My dad worked at Shady Glen in High School (50 years ago!) and it hasn't changed a bit since. My kids absolutely looovvveee the cheeseburgers with the draping, grilled cheese and we usually get mocha shakes and fries to go along. The ice cream is very good if there's room left over. Plus, we love the old fashioned and family-oriented ambience. Usually crowded and somewhat pricey - but worth it! Pros: Great Cheeseburgers, Friendly Staff, Nice Family Atmospher Cons: Somewhat Pricey, Not Enough Seating more

Local Legend 9/11/2003

Shady Glen has excellent ice cream, sundaes, burgers, etc. The restaurant has been a local legend since I can remember. It is a credit to the Rieg family that they survived the influx of fast food chains. I can go there dressed as is, and get a high quality meal served on dishes, not paper. The prices are fair. and my meal is always served by clean cut personel dressed in uniforms, not jeans and long hair. I would recomend Shady Glen to anyone. Pros: Clean, Quality, Parking more
