Dissapointed 12/23/2010

I had an horrible experience here! The server was rude, the food was just as bad. I know I will never be back there. more

The absolute worst! 8/31/2010

I drove by and from the outside, I was intrigued to park my car and walk back to Senor Frog. Of all of the restaurants on Ventura I passed, I am extermely disappointed that I selected this one.\r \r Firstly, it is more like a college bar than a restaurant. The place was empty during the lunch hour, except for a few people who were watching the World Cup. The bartender did not acknowledge me when I walked in. There was one server. She did not acknowledge me either. I waited 20 minutes until I finally flagged them down to take my order. Not sure how a server can walk around a restaurant or stand at a bar and not make eye contact with the customers for fear that they may wish to take an order. However, that was my experience.\r \r I ordered something like an Enchilada. I can't even remember because whatever it was - it was HORRIBLE! Bar food at it's worst. \r \r Lesson learned about doing drive-by evaluations. Don't judge a book by its cover. more

Upscale Mexican in cool digs 1/9/2009

Don't expect mushy refried beans and glops of cheese from this space. The food is really upscale with Mexican ingredients. The crab enchilada is wonderful, but yes, expensive. And the churros are to die for. The environs are really dark and the design is more Spanish bordello than Mexican. I like that it's different. I can find cheap Mexican in a crappy setting on every street corner. This is more of a place to take other people and enjoy the ambience. I don't know about the bar drinks, I stick with water or Coke. Pros: Interesting dishes, really fresh ingredients, not run-of-the-mill Mexican Cons: a bit expensive and a bit dark inside more

Is business so bad they can't afford air conditioning? 8/19/2008

First, the plusses...really great service, very friendly and accommodating staff. And a great, strong margarita (although I don't understand how $8 is a ""happy hour"" price for a margarita). The food was good, but nothing spectacular. The crunchy beef taco was quite good, and the cheese enchilada was very tasty with lots of cheese.\r \r What made the dinner miserable was how hot the restaurant was. They opened up the doors to the patio and it was so hot I was sweating the entire time we were there. Outside it was comfortable, but we were sitting inside and it wasn't. \r \r Overall I was disappointed, as I understand these are the same folks who run Max, which is one of my favorite restaurants. There's a little hole in the wall Mexican place on the southwest corner of Laurel Canyon and Burbank Blvd that's great (I don't know what it's called, it's in a little strip mall there) ... go there instead. \r more

shouldn't call themselves a mexican restaurant. 8/10/2008

i highly agree with the people who gave ""not good"" reviews. yes we were seated quick, and yes, the place is very nice. but the food, drinks, and service...were not. let's start with the food. being mexican american, i would not eat it again. it was bland, and very over-priced. i usually order the carne asada, but i couldn't because it was $24. i have never heard of carne asada being that expensive. EVER!! drinks.... my margarita was practically all margarita mix. could barely taste the tequilla. not what most people expect when they order an $8 margarita from a ""mexican"" restaurant. service..... the waitress was nice, but couldn't understand what i said when i ordered my enchiladas con queso (cheese enchiladas). it says it in spanish on the menu, but she didn't know what it meant. my friend ordered jalepenos, and didn't get them until he was almost done with the meal. i will never go there again. and wold not advise anyone else to go there either. Pros: nice set-up Cons: bad food, bad drinks, can't understand the menu more

bring taco bell sauce packets to add flavor to the food if you go 7/23/2008

bland food. just no spice or flavor. bring taco bell sauce packets to spice up the food. went on a friday night and it's really LOUD in there. you can't even hear the person across from you, so it's kind of annoying to have a conversation while you eat. I would NOT go back. For the money, Mexicali is WAY better !!! Pros: Location Cons: Being there more

not impressed 10/22/2007

Food was just ok. Drinks were good. Ambience? They just seem that they are trying too hard to be something they are not. Like the previous review said, go down the street to Casa Vega. Not worth the money. Seems like hanging out in the bar is your best bet here. Pros: Lively bar. Good drinks. Cons: Food. Decor confusing considering its a mexican joint. more

For socializing only 8/26/2007

Every bad review on this place about the food & service is right on. Talk about middle of the road food at best but you pay for top notch food? If the price range were between 8 & $12 bucks, and 12 being the most you could pay for anything on the menu, then it's in the ball park. But bottom line is, as said in one review, go to Casa Vega a couple blocks east to eat then come back to this joint to scam on chics at the bar. End of story, Pros: Good location & bar scene Cons: Food, service, price, and time you have to wait around to eat more

Stingy With Pours, Indifferent Service 6/26/2007

You better bring a flask along to dinner here as they are real stingy with the alcohol in their mixed, and overpriced, drinks. You can order a shot of tequila, but look out because they are not priced on the menu and you may be in for a big surprise when the check comes. The service is slow and the portions small. I have been here over a dozen times since they opened, and my feeling is that they have let things slip. Needless to say, I won't be returning. more

great food, great serice 4/9/2007

this was our first time here, and we loved it! the food was great, our waitress was super, and the margaritas were delicious. we got bunch of appertizers to share and they were delicious, the entries were huge and the desert menue makes you want to order every item on that list...my favorite was the churros with hot chocolate --- a must have! more

Made to leave the table! 11/22/2006

Ok ok it was Cinco de Mayo, but the waitress said we exceeded our time limit at the table! Even when we tried to order more drinks and food they said no, including the Manager.\r Never go back there again.... more

Love the bar 11/17/2006

The bar side of this place is great, fun, good drinks, nice servers... but the food side was pretty average. I would say sit at the bar, have some guacamole and some margaritas... but don't stay for dinner. more

Not Good! 11/15/2006

Finally tried this place with my two girlfriends and the only thing nice about it was the decor. The Salsa was awful, the food was very mediocre, the margaritas were terrible! I couldnt even drink the margarita it was so bad....do yourself a favor and go down the street to Casa Vega! Pros: Decor Cons: Margaritas, food, salsa! more

good dessert 11/5/2006

Went here just for dessert. The hot chocolate and churros were great, and the booths were very romantic. more

Best mole in LA 9/20/2006

This is definitely a cool spot to hang with friends on a Friday night. The crowd is mixed and young and the drinks are plenty strong. Last time I was there a bachellorette party was happening at the table behind me while across the way a couple cuddled and hid in the dark corner of their booth. I've been here more times than I count and by far the best choices on the menu in my opinion are the Enchiladas with mole and as an appetizer the flautas or the cheese fondue! Enjoy. Pros: Romantic, hip, Ambience Cons: Parking, Service more

Good drinks, bad service 9/2/2006

First off, menus with advertisements are cheesy. The waitress was awful. I think this place is going down hill as the place was not very busy. (I had been there about two years ago on the same night and the wait was over an hour and the food and service was excellent.) I am very patient, but the lack of customers made the poor service surprising. I hate having to ask the busboy to get the waitress. I would at times see her standing at the server station talking to other servers. The cadillac margartias were great as was the hot chocolate (this is a must have). The crab enchiladas were fishy. more

Great ambience and service, decent food 6/14/2006

Champurrado rocks and is hard to find. Churros were overdone. Taquitos yummy but greasy. Mole enchiladas spicy and falvorful. Pros: helpful staff, champurrado is great and hard to find anywhere Cons: food is only okay with ocassional above averages more

Waste of time 6/11/2006

Never got to find out if the food was good or not. After being ignored for the better part of an hour,(on a very slow night,) we finally gave up, paid for our drinks and left. Total waste of time. Especially disappointing because I was really looking forward to finally checking this place out. The menu looked delicious and the place had a great look. But, none of that can make up for apallingly bad service. Will never go back. Pros: looks great Cons: really bad service more

Loud !!!! 5/17/2006

I had to scream at my date the whole time, loudest restaurant in LA. The guacamole was good, the Sangria was yummy, the chopped salad was a plate of lettuce. Overall I wasnt too impressed. I hate advertisements in menus, how annoying! Pros: Sangria Cons: Carne Asada? , ok, if you say so. more

Can't go wrong with Sr. Freds 5/15/2006

After reading about Sr. Fred's in Sunset magazine I gave it a try for dinner...was NOT disappointed! Try the salmon with corn and mashed potatoes it is a sweet and spicy delicacy. I have gone back to check out the bar scene, always looking for a place to unwind after work, and was pleasantly surprised. Nice bartenders, friendly crowd good drinks. Pros: Food, Friendly Service more
