I went in because I had a scary muffler-related noise and they were the only place I could go on a Sunday. I was quoted $1,300 for a total exhaust system replacement. They were super nice, showed me the problem, explained the repair, and quoted a "worst case" based on the unknowns that are part of any repair on an older car.
They were not able to get the parts until Monday, giving me some time to check with both the place where I bought the car and my regular mechanic. It turned out that my regular mechanic knew over the phone exactly what the problem was, assured me that it is a very common thing with Subarus, and made an appointment to have a look.
45 minutes and $55 later I drove away with a safe, legal repair that did not involve replacing an entire exhaust system that was otherwise perfectly fine.
The people at this Sears auto center are very nice, no hard sell, no scare tactics. But do your homework before you hand over big bucks for more work than your situation requires.
