memorable experience 7/2/2010

Yes, you have to run the gauntlet of the gift shop which has the usual souvenirs as well as some nice ones, but the visit to the caves is well worth it. There is an entrance fee, but it is modest compared to what it must cost to keep the place so nice. The caves are cold, noisy and stinky and wonderful fun. The vantage point is from above as you see the different shades of the great bodies of the sea lions resting, regaling, barking and howling, flinging themselves onto and sliding off the rocks, with the wave action constant and the howls echoing in that cavernous secret place. A fabulous experience that I have shared with local friends and visitors from Germany and Japan. Not one person has been disappointed! more

great views 5/7/2006

I remember coming to the Sea Lion caves as a young girl every summer. They are located on a very sharp corner on highway 101 atop a HUGE cliff overlooking the ocean! There are lots of great places to look over, you can see sea lions in the water as well and down on the rocks. There is a nice little gift shop and you can pay to ride an elevator down into the sea lion cave and see them upclose! it is SO loud in there, lots of noisy sea lions. Very damp and cold too, so wear a jacket! Definately worth a trip to the bottom, they will even tell you if there are sea lions in the caves at that particular time. My husband and I tool our kids there last summer and they loved it as much as I remember as a child! more
