There are so many reasons why people indulge in bullying. Generally, the culprits do not have empathy for the person being bullied. Some kids may imbibe bullying attitude at home where proper parenting is lacking. Also, in a home or environment where aggression is employed to enforce obedience, the kids tend to become bullies eventually. Why do people bully? Keep reading to find the answer.
Lack of Empathy and Compassion
As mentioned earlier, people (whether kids or adults) who lack empathy or compassion usually engage in bullying. Sometimes, this may be associated with individual weakness or attitude. However, at other times, improper parental modeling such as using force to exact obedience or using abusive words at home may be the major reason why people bully. In a setting or environment where people do not care how others feel as long as they attain their goals, bullying is usually a characteristic of kids groomed in such environment. This can be gradually resolved with counseling and positive role-playing involvements.
Envy and Jealousy
Also, envy and jealousy can trigger bullying. For instance, a kid who is intelligent and gets special attention and treatment from the teachers may become the target of those who are not receiving such attention. In this scenario, the culprits may use different forms of bullying such as calling names, belittling their victims’ achievements and also adopting verbal abuse. The essence is to make the ‘bullied’ and his or achievements appear insignificant, while they make their social standing popular.
Prejudiced Attitude
Prejudiced attitude could also be another reason why people bully; a typical example is racial prejudice. Someone or a group of persons who probably look down on a particular race or tribe may take to bullying their victims in every possible way.
Whatever reason that people bully and whichever form the bullying takes, this menace usually have far-reaching negative effects on the victims and should be addressed with every sense of urgency.
