Forget about the neighborhood - rundown for sure, but not dangerous. The restaurant, however, is great. Bavarian atmosphere, excellent friendly owner/host and staff. Basic German menu with large portions, reasonable prices and consistant quality. Large beer selection and basic wine selection. The best of the few German restaurants in San Francisco. This place was really great for a change of pace. Schnitzel poertions were huge and very authentic. Top it off with a menu over 30 or so German and Austrian beers, and you have a pretty good time. We went at about 8:30 on a Saturday night and were seated right away. The bill came to about $95 for 4 people ordering an entree and a couple beers each. If you're up for a challenge, they serve their beers in one or two litre glasses shaped like boots. I had the schnitzel with anchovie sauce and it was fantastic. Fun place to eat and a great value. I've eaten here for several years, food is consistiently great. I've eaten at other German restaurants (including Suppen Kuche) and the food is definitely lacking elsewhere. Bread is served with a delicious herbed butter, potato soup is not so hearty that it fills you up before the entree. Weinerschnitzel (breaded panfried veal cutlet) is hearty & delicately seasoned, and the braised red cabbage is perfect accompaniment, cleansing your palate after each bite. Nurnburger sausage was another tasty dish- if you've never had Authentic (German) sausage, you must try it. Their Goulash- a tender, saucy stew and Paprika Chicken, cooked in a mild creamy Hungarian Paprika sauce are others to try on return visits. Spaten or Franziskaner= two excellent beers for the food. If you can make it for lunch, do so- a great way to sample their dishes at a discounted price- same portions! Call to find out their hours! Munich beergarden in San Francisco. I thought that the food was very authentic and that the beer list was excellent-- just like my experiences in Munich. They even have bench seating, just like in Baveria. The Schweinebraten I ordered here was as fantastic as any I've ever had in Munich, and they serve the right kind of beer to go with it. Unfortunately the salad that preceded my entree was a pathetic little iceberg-tomato combo in a puddle of Ranch-water. That's not authentic! Service was friendly, decor kitschy.
