My roommate and I decided we would drive into Samoa, and try their cookhouse- touted as the last surviving cookhouse in the west (back from the early logging days). We'd never been there before, but she had been recommended to it, as it's a neat place to dine. I will never forget the drive from Arcata. Fog. Thick. It's a wonder we found our way there! But we did.
What's neat is the obvious history of this place. You're stepping into a building over 100 years old, where food was served to mill men and longshoremen alike. (Check out the free museum, stock full of artifacts and pictures from back then). Everybody sits and long tables, and served food on huge platters and in huge bowls, so that everybody can pass around & share their meals.
I thought this place was neat, but I wasn't overly impressed with the food. Average fare. Also, I thought the prices were a tad on the expensive side, but I suppose they do that so you can enjoy the museum for free.
Here's a link so you check it out for yourself, before you visit. http://humboldtdining.com/cookhouse/
