First of all it's cute, tucked away in downtown Culver City. Everyone's friendly and they have great product! Vanessa did my hair and she was so sweet and HONEST it's hard to find sometimes. She didn't TRY to sell me product or talk me into or out of anything. I had black hair and then tried stripping it on my own, this was 5 months ago then I went to someone else and they highlighted it and fixed it good, but they are in central cali so when I recently moved down here I googles placed by my work and decided to give this place a shot. She really did a great job, did what I asked for and was definitely affordable. She also is very good and cutting and teaching how to dry hair the proper way. Her ideas were well thought out and made very realistic. She seemed like she was very educated. If you want a good cut and color and geez even a make-up lesson go to Vanessa! :) more

Best Cut, Best Color, Best Everything 4/7/2011

I originally found Sol Salon after deciding to cut off my butt-length hair in my freshman year of college. Because I'm HAPA/half Asian, my hair looks smooth and wavy but is actually a thick and snarly coarse mess of doom, so I needed to find the perfect person/salon to handle my drastic cut. Sol Salon got all the rave reviews with people hailing Catherine as a Dumbledore wizard of hair, so from there I was set. I've been seeing Cat now for 2 years and she knows my hair to a T. I remember she asked about my hair routine when we first met (I told her I wasn't much of a hair brusher and she factored that into my low maintenance cut). We bounce suggestions off each other and she always thoroughly explains everything - ex. my layers are slightly shorter in the back for more volume, my highlights are more mahogany brown than red because fully red highlights would fade too fast. She really is a Dumbledore because she has an answer for everything, and of course my hair has never been healthier or looked better. On appointments, the salon has always been flexible in scheduling and is always accommodating to last minute changes. Prices are on the lower end for the area. The clients are diverse (men, women, kids, young, older) which is telling of the laid back atmosphere, since everyone seems to feel comfortable here. I can't recommend Catherine or Sol Salon highly enough. They're the best of the best. more

Dependable excellence 1/17/2011

I've been going to Sylvia at Sol Salon for years .....that alone is a huge compliment because I am very particular and I appreciate fine work.... Sylvia is not only an excellent hair cutter, she is truly a great colorist and that is what really makes the difference in a talented hair dresser. She has consistently come up with variations on my natural look that has covered my increasing grays while enhancing my given colors with an abundance of natural looking variations. My hair is really important to me and when it looks healthy and youthful, I feel more healthy and youthful. Such is the case whenever I go to Sylvia for a cut, a touch up, a full color, a Brazilian Blow-Out, or what have you. She is the best I've found. more

Not as great as I expected 8/13/2008

I went to Sol Salon after reading the reviews on Citysearch and Yelp. I was not that impressed. I have long hair and wanted to keep the length. I also asked for layers in my hair and boy did I get them. Cynthia cut so much of hair for the shortest layer. I felt like i had gotten a mullet. I ended up giving myself bangs to lessen the damage of the mullet cut. Now I'm still growing out that shortest layer and looking for a new salon that won't butcher my long hair. They also charge extra from long hair. On the plus side, Cynthia was very friendly. more

Best kept secret, hands down 3/14/2008

I went on the hunt for a salon after a horrible haircut from...my sister. After shopping around on Citysearch, I settled on calling Sol Salon because of the great reviews. As soon as I walked in, I knew I made the right decision. Cynthia was awesome, she was warm and friendly, and knew exactly what she was doing. She cut my hair in cute, flippy layers, the perfect cut I'd always been looking for. Pros: Great staff, ambience, highly skilled, great conversation Cons: Parking more

Fantastic Salon! 3/12/2008

Great experience with Cynthia! First time there and she was wonderful, listening to exactly what I wanted. She pushed me to cut bangs which I absolutely love! The price was great and the salon was great. Can't wait to go back. A thousand times better than some fussy salon in Brentwood or Beverly Hills. Pros: talent, friendliness, price more

They really know how to cut hair! 8/26/2007

I had been wanting to change my long, straight, brown hair- always parted in the center- for a long time, but I was nervous because I couldn't remember a time when I had a really ""Great"" haircut. I actually found Sol Salon through the reviews on CitySearch so I wanted to continue to spread the good word! I told the stylist, Christine, that I knew I wanted something different while still keeping my hair long and without changing the color. She then took out several scrapbooks full of pictures of different hairstyles and made suggestions as to what she thought would work best on me. After reviewing my guidelines- keep it long/no dye please- I decided to just trust her and let her do whatever she thought would look best. When all was said and done, my hair looked AMAZING! Now, a few months later , my haircut has grown out extremely well and I am still getting compliments! Hooray for finally getting a truly great haircut!!! Pros: Convenient westside location- Lots of street parking- Friendly staff Cons: Not cheap more

If you want an edgy look, go to Sol Salon! 5/2/2007

I was feeling impulsive one day, and I decided to chop off my luscious glory. It was a big step for me since I've had long hair for most of my life. I was sick of it and I wanted to try something new. So, I went to a cool looking salon in Culver City on my way home from lunch. I walked in and right away, I knew this was the salon for me to experiment with my hair. The stylists who approached me first was cute, funky and I LOVED her haircut! I knew right away I was in good hands. She understood the look I was going for and she helped me figure out exactly what I wanted. She even suggested I donate my hair to Locks of Love, since I had enough hair to spare (all twelve inches.) I got the best massage during my shampoo. While feeling reluctant about cutting all my hair off, she was reassuring all the way through, which made me feel very comfortable. In the end, I got the best, cute haircut AND color I've ever gotten. I have a standing appointment for the next two months! I highly recommend to ask for an appointment with Catherine. Look for one of her fliers hanging around because you'll save quite a bit of money! Pros: Great coffee shop & pizza place next door and plenty of parking. Cons: Not enough people know about it. more

You Need Some ""Sol For Your Soul""? Culver City's cool & funky hair salon, Sol Salon. 2/8/2007

I discovered a few years ago that there's a cool and funky hair salon in Culver City. All the stylists are female and are really friendly and down to earth (not to mention some of them are CUTE and nice to look at). They get pretty busy in there, so like a typical guy I always call last minute to get an appointment, but they always try to accommodate you no matter how annoying you are. Pros: Massaging shampoos, parking, price, excellent service, great coffee shop next door Cons: can't complain more
