Sloppy Server 5/17/2008

very very poor sloopy service........I've gone there to meet up my old friends...boy I took a risk of having the waiter keep on playing footsie...and stepping on my feet..........while ordering and givin us the bill...at the last moment of me cherishing the last drop of beer....he suddenly knocks the glass over and spilling it all over the table and on me. The food wasn't all that good, the presentations of the food was sloppy and I could of made better sushi than that,...the table was sticky and the sushi guys at the bar kept on staring ....at us since we were the only one eating....the menu was writen by hand....and it was confusing to order....no wonder there is no on coming on a friday night....totally empty......i wouldn't go back there if someone paid me. They were lucky my friends gave them a good standard tip....or else....none at all. Pros: it was edible, it's small Cons: presentation of food don't look like sushi more

Good place, no longer atm. 1/6/2007

I am replying to let people know that there are new owners at Sakana. Everything is new there. Okamoto san is no longer there. This was the best sushi place in Arcadia/ San Gabriel Valley. I'm sorry that the last poster had a bad experience. My family has been frequenting this place for years, and I am very sad to not be able to experience the chef's food. \r \r Hopefully Yoshida in San Marino is as good. Pros: Great food, great food great food Cons: no longer the same owners more

Worst restaurant experience ever! 9/24/2006

Rudest service I have ever experienced! We were completely ignored by waitress, owner and even our own sushi chef standing right in front of us. After waiting around for an hour and receiving about 4 orders of sushi, we asked for our check from every single staff member on multiple occasions who all just kept nodding. It took us an additional 40 minutes to get the check. There were only 3 other parties in the restaurant and there were NO apologies made. Would NEVER go back. Oh, food was ok, have had much better sushi elsewhere. Pros: OK sushi for San Gabriel Valley Cons: Horrendous service more

Great neighborhood sushi 8/10/2006

Sakana is great for a simple sushi/sashimi meal when I don't feel like making the trek to Sushi Gen in Little Tokyo. They offer good lunch specials. Sashimi is fresh. Service is typical, not great. I think it's the best J-restaurant in Arcadia (which not saying a whole lot, but just know to avoid the rest!) Pros: fair prices, no frills Cons: little to no ambience more

Great food, but bad service 11/1/2005

There is no doubt that the food is fresh and fantastic. However, the service was a turn off. I do love the food. But, I don't know if I'll go back again. My friend and I ordered a sashimi for dinner. We also ordered an appetizer. Yet, the waitress (think she is the owner) forgot to give us our Miso soup until close to the end of our meal. And we had to ask her for it. In addition, our appetizer came way after the main course. And then worse, when I asked for green tea, she forgot about it. We had to get another waitress to get us the tea. Pros: Excellent food Cons: Bad service more

Authentic~ 10/10/2003

The food there is so~ authentic Japanese it's scary! They have such a great deep fried flounder and the shrimp you see swimming in the tank~ that can be cooked in three different ways! PLus they have a two layered unagi with rice! None of that flimsy one layer stuff that barely tickles your taste buds! It has two lays of unagi and their unagi is roasted! Their fish is always fresh but they are really busy~ but hey, busy to me means great food! Plus their hostess is very friendly, but other than her the other waiters are less than enthusiastic. Pros: Great sashimi, Authentic Japanese, S-bar w/ great chef Cons: Crowded, Not a group place more

These people do things right 12/26/2002

This place offers a sushi, in the way it should be. Sit at the bar to watch the chef open whole Aji fish, making a little pile of meat on a boat of fish. Once you finish eating the meat, the fish boat (head and the spine) will be cooked to make a Hone senbei. This place teaches you the philosophy again, ""there is not a part in fish that is wasted"", like how things should be! They have amazingly authentic food (scare most Americans away), like taking little fish swimming in a pool of water and next moment they're in batter to be deep fried. The interior decoration wasn't very romantic. It would be okay if you take your baby with you. Don't go if you cannot handle fish head in front of you. This place sure cost you some, but hey, that's the way it should be again... Pros: RIGHT sushi, RIGHT sushi, RIGHT sushi Cons: little pricy, not fancy seating more
