Delicious modern italian cuisine 4/3/2009

I was never lucky enough to experience the North End Sage, but dinner last night at South End Sage was great. The moment we walked through the door, the smells from the kitchen made my mouth water. The night started with the Sage Ghost, their house "martini," which was strong and flavorful with hints of the sage-infused vodka. The asparagus appetizer was to die for. The lamb was tender and delicious. The duck was cooked perfectly with a hint of fig sweetness and the homemade gnocchi was out of this world. The service was excellent. Our server was very detailed, informative and charming. The restaurant had a modern but cozy atmosphere. The prices were on the high end but all in all it was a great meal. Pros: Great food, great service, great atmosphere Cons: Pricey more

Didn't meet the hype 3/29/2009

The food and atmosphere were good but not that great. Neither one of us was impressed with our dishes. Everything also took a very long time. We had to ask where are apps were. The wine list was pretty specific to certain Italian regions and tastes. Not much on variety. You either liked Sage's buyer's tastes or nothing. Not only that, they were way over priced. Overall, I would say it was good but cost way too much. I know why they moved from the North End now, not great and couldn't make the owner rich. I wouldn't go back. Not with Anchovies, Giacomos and Rocca so close by for cheaper and better Italian. Pros: good food Cons: price more

It was the perfect romantic dinner for two! From the moment we walked in, the servers were warm and friendly. Our server made many suggestions, she was very knowledgeable of the wines and food ingredients. Every course came with a full description and each one was better than the last. I have to say, it was the best Valentine's Day for me because of our experience at this excellent restaurant. I would highly recommend it. Cons: parking more

Unfortunately Boston is lacking in truly great Italian restaurants..ones that take the heart of Italian cooking..fresh ingredients, simple flavors, expert preparation..and then take their own spin on it..its not about what most people think of "italian food"...its about using the italian way of cooking as a jumping off point and seeing where you can take it...and Sage is one the few boston restaurants to rise above...exceptional food, a warm cozy atmosphere..smart but unubtrusive service...really everything you could want except a parking space..highly recommended Pros: exceptional quality, good service, wonderful atmosphere more
