I was just in town on business and being a ""foodie"" decided to try Sage's second restaurant since I was a fan of the Fort Lauderdale branch. My attitude and expectations were high especially after seeing the similar menu and chatting with the owner a bit. But it was all downhill from there.
I always test a french bistro by trying their onion soup as to me that's like making sure the ""red sauce"" is good in an Italian place before you get adventurous. The broth was delicious, but to serve a French Onion Soup with anything less than Gruyere cheese is culinary blasphemy. It was provolone. I returned it for the Goat cheese appetizer tarte with arugula. It wasn't awful, but considering the way it was described in the menu, I wasn't blown away. It kind of looked like heated up pizza crust with goat cheese spread on it, roasted garlic chunks and buried under a sea of arugula. Fair, but not great.
For entree, at the owners recommendation, I ordered the organic filet mignon, but put the ""Steak Maurice"" sauce on it. This was described as asparagus, melted brie and a raspberry type sauce. I ordered it Med Rare. The dish came out looking nice, but I was a little shocked at the brie presentation. I kinda hoped there would be melted brie on it like a covering or crust, but it was 2 slices of brie with the outer shell on it laying on top of the steak like the number ""11"". The steak was way rare..and while this is disappointing, it sometimes happens. What was more disappointing is sending it back and getting a brand new filet...just as rare. I mean, really?!
My dinner partner ordered the famous duck which is on the menu as some ""#1"" Duck in Florida type of thing. good marketing and she ordered it. She asked for it extra crisp. It came crisp in about 4 spots on the bird and they honey raspberry sauce was again...fair, but not great.
By far, the best part of the meal was the waiter. He felt for us especially as the steak came out rare...twice. But I would love to say, I would go back there again. All I can say is...take the extra drive and go to Fort Lauderdale. This was a disappointing miss.
Pros: Nice bar. No wait. Friendly and helpful waiter
Cons: Food was disappointing. Chef de Cuisine seemed inept.
