The History
The Sedgwick Branch first opened on July 9, 1951, in the ground floor of the Sedgwick Houses, a large housing project. The library has been at its present location since April 1994, in an innovative building designed by architect David W. Prendergast. The site is also home to "Cygnus A," an environmental sculpture by Bronx artist Sandy Gellis.
The Collection
The library houses African-American and Hispanic heritage collections; reference and circulating collections in English and Spanish; computers and CD-ROMs. Services include lectures, films and performances for adults and children. The children's room is named in honor of Nicholasa Mohr, a well-known Hispanic children's author from the Bronx, and features beanbag chairs for informal reading.
