Russo's is by far the best fruit and vegetable market in the Boston area. They carry a wider variety and generally have lower prices than the supermarkets. As for variety, in summer, they usually carry several varieties of melon, like Crenshaw and Sharlynn, along with the standard cantaloupe and honeydew. The prices for these specialty melons are much lower than at a market, if they even have the item.
Russo today had Romaine, green leaf, red leaf and Boston letture for 98 cents a head. The markets are all higher. They had fresh picked that day corn - deliciously sweet. They carry oyster mushrooms and chanterelles. They have a wide selection of Asian vegetables - many kinds of choy - and Asian and Latin fruits.
Russo's also has one of the better cheese shops in the area. It is not as cheaply priced.
They also have prepared foods, but the real gem beyond the produce is the bakery. Their breads are fantastic with thick, chewy crusts and cost a fraction of bread elsewhere. I bought a rustic loaf for $2 and their Vienna Bread only recently went up to $1.49 from 99 cents for a large loaf. They also carry a number of breads from Montreal bakeries. And to top it off, they make excellent pastries and cookies. Their macaroons are fabulous.
