A Review of Rudy Lechner???s (10/19/417 meal)\r \r When our leader gave us the opportunity to dine at Rudy Lechner???s, I was excited. I love German food and I was told that this was a great place to eat.\r \r When we went there last Thursday, I was totally disappointed.\r \r The point is not about the quality of the food ??? you either like their recipes or you don???t.\r \r I am not complaining about the waiter ??? he worked as hard as he could.\r \r My issue is the circumstances and the management.\r \r Bottom Line: they were not at all prepared for our group. Yes, the numbers were a few different, but they were not ready for the original number or the few less that showed up.\r \r There were not enough chairs in the room when we arrived. Our people had to help them to get chairs.\r \r There was only one waiter assigned to us for the evening. There were two others who came in at different times to offer assistance. But one person cannot effectively take care of beverages, refills, orders, desserts and payouts, especially in a room as small and tight as they gave us.\r \r It was about 2 hours before we even got to the entrees.\r \r Checkout took over 45 minutes.\r \r When I said something to the manager, she said that nothing was their fault, it was all ours (even though we had a few LESS than expected?). Then she said, in a very condescending manner, ???Of course, the customer is always right,??? to close off the conversation.\r \r If you want to buy my meal and if this is the place that you insist on going, then I will go to eat with you. But if I am paying, I want to give my money to someone who is trying to take care of their customers.\r \r But I never intend to go back with a large group. It is not worth it. more

Went to Rudi's with my family for lunch last week and after 20 years of loyalty and satisfaction we will never go again. They look like they are on their last legs and trying everything to stay alive. The fantastic salad bar (a Rudi's tradition) is GONE. What was a choice of soup or salad at lunch\r entrees is now simply salad (and not even good....wimp and ordinery). Even the traditional entrees lacked flavor and presentation. Such a shame!!!! A wonderful restaurant gone...gone....gone. more

Rudi Lechner 10/5/2011

I ate @ Rudi's a while back and was very dissapointed. Growing up eating & learning to cook German food made this a very unpleasant experience. I had the Hungarian Goulash which had ingredients missing. Where was the Paprika??(which Hungry is famous for) The Spaetzle were soggy. My son had the ""sample platter"" and it looked like somebody that ate too much got sick on the plate.Different items not identifiable. As for the waitress she should have had a cup of coffee to wake up. Gastfreunlichkeit and cleanlieness are big in Germany and BOTH were missing. As far as I'm concerned I will NOT come back and can not recommend this place to friends & Family. Some people might like the food BUT PLEASE don't think of this as authentic German flavor. more

Austrian-German comfort 2/1/2011

I took my Austrian friend and another friend who had visited Germany shortly before, and they both gave it thumbs up. We enjoyed wiener Schnitzel, hungarian goulash, sauerkraut, Kaesespaetzle, and it was all great! I love the ambiance, the bar room how cozy the restaurant. Rudi is always there and very hands on. Wednesday is great for entertainment and the heritage plate. Restaurant Traveler more

Thank you for making the celebration complete! 7/15/2010

We celebrated my stepsons 18th birthday last night at Rudi's and it truly was a celebration thanks to the kindness of these folks. it was my first time to dine at Rudi's. My stepson...visits frequently...I wanted a Baked Alaska for the celebration cake and didn't realize it needed to be ordered 24 hours in advance. When I called to order the cake yesterday morning I was told about the 24 hour policy. I hung up the phone very disappointed. Not two minutes later did the lady call me back and say they would make it happen! What an extreme delight! The food was great, the service warm and friendly (thanks Juan) and the Baked Alaska was tremendous but the fact that they made it happen on such short notice was absolutely priceless!!! Thanks again, you made our celebration complete! Pros: good old fashioned service with a smile more

Amazing Food, but... 4/9/2009

Rudi's offers an amazing assortment of authenic german/austrian food. However the service isn't all that great. It seems swarmy which cheapens the experience. Coming back on different occasions within a couple months and being in the service industry, it seems the management has a problem with keeping a full staff. Pros: Every item is to die for. Cons: Service more

"European dining experience" 11/19/2008

We live in Humble and travel all the way across Houston to eat at the only authentic Austrian restaurant we know of anywhere near here. My wife's mother grew up in Salzberg and she loved this place. The atmosphere matches the food. This really is a "dining experience". If you like German cuisine, or if you want to try the real thing... Go! more

Best Wiener Schnitzel in Houston 10/7/2008

This restaurant is dingy in an old Bavarian village way which I find appealing. The place has been around forever and little has changed, especially as far as the decor is concerned. I like the atmosphere - reminds me of my visits to Germany, especially the bavarian village eateries I visited. Pros: Service, Food Cons: Music more

This restaurant is dingy in an old Bavarian village way which I find appealing. The place has been around forever and little has changed, especially as far as the decor is concerned. I like the atmosphere - reminds me of my visits to Germany, especially the bavarian village eateries I visited. The food is excellent for the most part, especially the famous wine soup is worth trying at least once - then you'd be hooked. They have a great sald bar as well with some tasty german appetizers. Prices there have jumped quite a bit so I am not sure if it will qualify as $ since a glass of beer is around $6 and the cheapest item on the dinner menu is about $15 but overall this is a great place to visit with a great friendly staff. My complaint would be mostly about the music - the music could be better, the "band" playing there should've retired long time ago. Pros: Service, Food Cons: Music more

Great little restaurant 5/5/2008

I have been eating at Rudi's for many, many years. Rudi is personally on site and pays attention to his menu, kitchen, and his staff. The German dishes are always excellent and the other choices like trout and lighter entrees are always excellent too. The place is always packed, yet the service is always efficient and friendly. I keep saying 'always' because I've yet to have a bad or even less than excellent experience in this place. The live entertianment is a pleasant bonus and Rudi making his speciality flaming drink at your tableside is a treat. Pros: Food, service, atmosphere Cons: None, parking can be scarse more

Reminds me of my grandmother every time! 1/7/2008

My family is German, and I have many fond memories of my grandmother cooking authentic German meals for us when she visited. When I moved to Houston, my husband and I tried Rudi Lechner's. So many of the items on the menu looked familiar! The Hungarian Goulash is exactly like my grandmothers - and the very best I have had at any restaurant. My husband has ordered various schnitzel's and sausages, and he always is satisfied. They serve a wide range of German beers and wines. There is an excellent salad bar that serves salads, pickled items, and liver pate. There is live music on the weekends with oompah tunes and a long Alpine Horn. The owner, Rudi, is always walking the room and asking how the service is. The experience is not to be missed! more
