Editorial review from Citysearch 7/1/2012

This is the best Indian restaurant you can find in Arizona. They have amazing lunch buffet with great customer service. It's a family run restaurant with wonderful menu as well. Tandoori chicken, Chicken tikka masala, chicken karahi are so good. Bar is very nice with good indian and local beer. more

Best Indian Food Since I left London!! 9/3/2010

What a find. I was down in Tempe dog sitting and drove past this place and stopped on a wim. SOOOO glad I did!! Food was fresh tasting and brightly flavored. Highly recomend the lamb saag!! The only issue I would say is that the naans were a bit thinner I am used to, but still tasty none the less...just different than what I'm used to. If you are looking for great Indian food at a reasonable price please don't pass up Royal Taj!!! more

Great Veggie Biryani 10/11/2009

This is one of the greatest Indian restuarants in Tempe. I have moved to Mesa and still come over here to enjoy the cusines.\r \r Mz Re Pros: Best Indian food in Tempe Cons: I moved too far away! more

Will keep coming back....but hope they move to Surprise!!!! 11/4/2008

Well I was craving some good Indian cusine and was very skeptical to search out for a great place just because when you are in the mood for something specific you don't want to end up with a lousy taste in your mouth. So my husband and I decided to trust the reviews about this place and we even drove all the way from SURPRISE ! It was so good I would drive back EVERY time I crave it just to know I was getting good stuff. I had the Karahi Tandoori Chicken Saag (extra spicey) mmmmm I can still taste it. My husband had the Karahi Chicken Fresh it was great also but not very spicey ...along with the garlic Naan bread. \r I have to say I was SHOCKED for an hour and half that we were there on a Saturday night only one other couple came. I do believe that if they moved to Surprise they would get ALOT more business . Don't know if they are just stuck in the wrong location?!? However we will keep coming back and I will and have already recommended Royal Taj to everyone I know. WONDERFUL food and sweet hospitality!! \r Only reason not five stars is the bathroom was small , dark and kinda dirty . more

Best Indian Food I've sampled in the U.S. thus far! 4/19/2008

Oh my! I absolutely love the family atmosphere of the staff - so welcoming, smiling and seem very peaceful and happy. The restaurant setting is elegant in an off-beat manner. Hints of upper class in table settings, in a middle class atmosphere and environment. Comfortable to say the least. The selection of beverages (beer for my father and husband) is delectable, cool and refreshing against the warm spices and fragrant dishes. My 87 year old father from Indonesia absolutely loves this restaurant and we make it a point to bring him as often as he wishes. He was always ""the"" cook in our household and his taste buds over-rule any other opinions we may have as he is always right on. The dishes are prepared immaculately with the perfect blends of spices. The rice (a staple in our family line) is perfect! I've sampled Indian food in many large cities in the United States and honestly, this humble restaurant is my absolute favorite for the food, the price, the attention to decor, cleanliness and happy service. The one person who gave this beautiful treasure a bad review must have been having a bad day. You cannot go wrong with this, if you love to explore different ethnic foods, and like a little spice in your life! Enjoy and many happy returns! more

Only place for indian in central az! 8/12/2007

I recently moved away from arizona but for the 10 years that i did live there, my family and I at there at least once a month. It was the first indian I had ever tasted and in the long time since first dining there I have compared all restaurants to it. No one has their chicken tikka masala beat. Go to this place, support local flavor, and have a great evening! more

Second Worst Indian food in the valley 7/10/2007

The food is so bad that I feel that it's in it's own class of bad Indian food alongside Pasand. This food tastes extremely amateur-like. The beer is stale and tastes like it hasn't been changed from the tap in over a year. Pros: Decent Ambience Cons: FOOD, Price more

Best Indian restaurant in PHX! 4/27/2007

I've eaten at every Indian restaurant in the East Valley and Royal Taj is the best! It's more affordable than places like ""Jewel of the Crown"" in Scottsdale and the food is so flavorful!\r My favorite is the malai kofta and the chana masala. The garlic naan is fabulous, too. For lunch, the buffet is awesome, usually featuring several vegetarian dishes, several chicken dishes, rice, naan, and two desserts.\r My husband tried to trick me, bringing home take-out from another Indian restaurant. I could tell right away. How? Because the rice at Royal Taj is long and flavorful. The malai kofta is perfectly moist and full of spices and the chana masala is perfectly cooked and has just the right amount of sauce. No other place does this stuff as well as Royal Taj! Also... try the rasmalai, if they have it. It's delicious. Pros: Food, service, menu Cons: Location is kind of out-of-the-way more

Best Indian food since I was in East London 12/21/2006

Since coming to AZ, I've never even looked for a good Indian restaurant. Finally, I decided to look on City Search and found Royal Taj. The reviews were right on! Every single dish we ordered was tasty and fresh! Since my husband had never had authentic Indian food, we had our server explain and recommend some dishes. I had the Karahi Shrimp (spicy!) and my husband had the Karahi Lamb (also spicy!). The shrimp was big and fresh; the lamb was tender and juicy! We ordered the garlic naan, which I swear they just made from scratch a few minutes earlier! We finished off the meal with the wonderful desserts of mango lassi and rasmalai (a wonderful recommendation from our server!). We're only going to be in AZ a few months longer and hopefully we'll get to Royal Taj as many times as possible! Pros: even on a slow night, the food was still fresh and tasty! Cons: a little cold in restaurant, could have turned up the heat (actually the food warmed us up!) more

A thoroughly enjoyable, unhurried dining experience. Pleasant and helpful staff who go out of their way to please with off-menu creations. 7/18/2006

This place has a wonderful feel and character. The hostess is cheery and attentive. Tables are immaculately dressed in maroon linen. We savored Kingfisher beer from the impressive-looking bar. The samosas were just the right thing to set the pace for dinner. We ordered entrees after some pleasant conversation with the hostess. My mate was is in a mood for Chjicken Tikka Masala with Basmati rice and I indulged with the Lamb Korma - Lamb Biryani combination. There was the mandatory Garlic Naan to nibble before being served dinner. Right after the food arrived I regretted not having ordered a vegetable dish. Our hostess suggested a seasonal okra dish that the chef quickly and expertly prepared. It was delectable and perfectly complemented the lamb. Both the chicken and lamb were fresh and tender, seasoned and cooked just right. Portions were generous but our appetites were driven by the great taste and most of the food was devoured. My mate remarked on the background music which was not so loud as to interfere with conversation but enough to muffle the noise. We ordered Indian coffee and waited to select desert. The rasmalai with its distinctive rose water syrup rounded off the evening for me perfectly, while my mate preferred to pass on desert, saying she had begun her diet early! We lingered for a while after paying the very reasonable bill, enjoying the cheerful atmosphere. The Royal Taj is now on our ""regular"" list, especially since it is so convenient to the 101 freeway. I've sampled Indian food the world over and say without reservation that Tempe's Royal Taj is on par with the best. more

a little treasure in the heart of Tempe. 7/9/2005

The Royal Taj has to be on of the best Indian restaurant's Arizona has to offer. I frequented an Indian restaurant back in New Orleans. I was reluctant to find a new place, but Royal Taj has just become one of my favorite restaurants. We both ordered the Tandoor Dinners (spicy). It was wonderful, it came with an array of wonderful Indian delicacies and dessert and Indian coffee all in one package. I highly recommend trying this place out! Pros: service, ambiance, food more

Good Food and Warm Service 2/11/2005

The food and service at Royal Taj is just wow! I am traveling to Phoenix on business for couple of weeks and the Indian food at Royal Taj is the best that I have tried in larger Phoenix area. It is worth the extra drive from city center. I got a nice warm welcome, lovely food and good service overall. Specially, try the briyanis - they are real good. I will recommend it to anyone looking for good Indian food while in Phoenix, Tempe or Scottsdale. Pros: Live music, Enough parking, Great Ambience Cons: Papads can be better more

The best Indian food around!! 7/6/2004

We are from Seattle where there's an Indian restuarant on every corner it seems. Our biggest dining disappointment since we've moved to Scottsdale is there are very few Indian restuarants to choose from. We've managed to try three of them and Royal Taj is by far and away the BEST! The free crisps and dip when you arrive are wonderful and the chicken tika marsala is to die for. We were so pleased we will be back again and again (even though it's a 40 minute drive from our home)! Pros: food, service, value more

good tandoori 8/13/2002

We like the the food, especially the tandoori and naan, though somedays it's a little burnt. We especially like the Indi chips and dips served gratis while you're waiting for your order. THAT is why we keep coming back. Nobody else I've tried offers them. We also like to watch the Indi TV while we're eating and they have a very well stocked bar. Service has always been good and sometimes great. We'll keep coming because of the chips and TV, and the tandoori has NEVER been bad. Pros: good parking, Indi TV, good bar Cons: inconsistant quality more
