Ronin, RO 7/15/2010

I ended up at Ronin on a whim and haven't stopped raving about it since. I'd passed it a bunch of times and never really knew what it was, b/c it looks like something that should be in LA (and I mean that in the best way... we need some more of that in these parts). The decor just totally transports you to another place. The music is AWESOME, the open windows in the lounge are AMAZING in the summer, the martinis are some of BEST I've had in life. I'd rave about the food, but I always head to the lounge and skip the food. :-p Awesome, awesome place. I hope the owner opens more restaurants, I bet he could create a killer latin-vibe lounge/restaurant. Pros: open windows, awesome music, amazing drinks more

AMAZING SERVICE AND AWESOME FOOD 5/6/2010

Its like a little hidden GEM! I love the food, it always comes out great! The wasabi potatoes are unique and delicious. There are many choices between hot food and sushi that you never get bored. The service is awesome. The staff has always been on top of what they do and each person is fun in there own way. There are a lot of different Cold saki's to drink as well, I recommend this place to everyone. You can sit in the lounge or in the dinning area depending on what your looking for. plus the windows open in the lounge area and on a summer day thats beautiful! Pros: clean, great atmosphere, polite people more

Best Restaurant in Town!!!! 3/30/2010

Ronin is by far the best restaurant in the metro Detroit area. Regardless of what you're looking for you'll find it there. The food is amazing....from the sushi to hot food, the service always comes with a smile, and the atmosphere makes you feel like you are far from Detroit. I go there at least once a week. I definitely suggest checking it out. Pros: Total Experience Cons: not really any:) more

Love It! 3/20/2010

I love this place. The atmosphere is rustic and charming. The decor is understated and refreshing. The food is great, my favorite is to go for dinner during the week and get sushi and sake. I love the hot crab cone roll and spicy scallops. It's one of those places that I will always go back to. Pros: Cozy, unpretentious, classy, great music Cons: Not open for lunch more

Favorite restaurant in the metro area! 3/20/2010

Had a wonderful experience at Ronin! It was our first time--our server was very helpful. She immediately told us about their monthly features--the shrimp app was amazing. We split some rolls for dinner-we loved the pink roll! I can't wait to go again!! Pros: Great food and service Cons: no reservations--so plan ahead more

Exceptional! 3/3/2010

I know that five stars is a generous accolade, but this place deserves it. I've eaten at some of the best sushi houses in the country, and by far the quality, freshness, and innovation that Ronin provides is unparalleled. It's even better than Koi (i've been to both the LA and Vegas locations). The Kobe beef sliders are melt in your mouth, the cocktails and service are both phenomenal, and the ambience is intimate but still modern. The lounge seating that opens out to the street in the summer time is one of my favorite things about this place. I keep telling my friends from Chicago about this place, and it's so hard for them to believe that the best sushi is in this suburb of Detroit. Nevertheless, they finally visited, and were thrilled. Pros: The best quality sushi around Cons: can't think of any! more

Exceptional ambiance, friendly knowledgable service, amazing food and sushi 12/5/2008

I visited Ronin in Royal Oak for dinner for the first time and had a great experience. The atmosphere was dimly lit, with comfortable leather seats and otomans. The music selection and quailty was unique and excellent. The drink menu offered several interesting and creative options with a simplistic yet excellent wine selection. The dinner menu offered a wide variety of options with beautiful presentation and thoughtful planning. I highly recommend the Diver Scallops and Kobe Sliders. The sushi menu was original and approachable. The quality was the freshest I have had in the area. Royal Oak desperately needed a qualtiy sushi establishment, and Ronin more than delivers. Pros: Service, Ambience, Valet and nearby parking structures, food and sushi more

Happy hour specials! 10/13/2008

I am a big fan of sushi and love going to Ronin. They just added happy hour with a must item, Kobe Sliders. They also added some new cocktails..including their delicious Cucumber saketini. In addition, there are new minature bottles of cold sake including Zipang, a sparkling sake with a hint of citrus. This place has a great atmosphere with friendly service. Sometimes it takes a while for the sushi to come but that's because it is usually busy. Overall I would recommend this place to a sushi lover or an average joe. No reservations tho so make sure you get there early.. Pros: Great service and ambience Cons: no reservations more

Great for happy hour, terrible for sushi 9/12/2008

I would recommend this restaurant as a good place for drinks, nice atomosphere. However, I would absolutely not recommend this bar as far as sushi; it's terrible. Pros: Good ambience Cons: Low quality sushi -overpriced for what you get more

still my favorite 7/20/2008

Ronin has been open for quite a while now, but it still my favorite by far. While I used to stick strictly to ordering sushi, I have recently ventured into exploring the food menu, and have found that I may even like some of those options even better. I dream about the diver scallops. The chef is creative and truly understands the mixing flavors and textures. On top of the amazing food Ronin also offers a great place to hang out. The music great, the service super friendly, and the overall mood is exactly what anyone is looking for. Pros: diverse menu, friendly staff, cool ambience more

Great customer service, food. 5/20/2008

My wife and I went there for our 1st Wedding anniversary. The service was timely, polite, engaging (Thank you, Wendy). We ordered the Crab soup, the sweet potato in tempura, pork, gyoza, and various sushi. It all exceeded expectation. Especially the Crab soup. I would heartily suggest to anyone looking for a place to enjoy good food, nice atmosphere, to visit Ronin. more

Slow service, not authentic, generally self-conscious 5/7/2008

This is a restaurant that clearly puts more emphasis on its decor than its food, and for sushi, that is not a good thing. The service is slow, even when the restaurant is only half-full. Ronin charges New York prices for mediocre sushi. The rolls are mushy and the menu is overly complex. They would do better to offer fewer selections and make them of higher quality. I also tend to be suspicious of any restaurant that spends money (in energy bills) on piping music out onto the street, even though it's not on a corner that gets all that much pedestrian traffic. If you want a good, clean, Japanese dining experience, don't waste your money at Ronin. Pros: location Cons: food more

Bad experience 2/9/2008

Had a very poor experience with the service at this restaurant. Also, a bit too smoky compared to other bars. Food was ok. Would not recommend. Pros: Valet service Cons: Service, food more

great new place 12/8/2007

I recently decided to try the new sushi restaurant in Royal Oak that everyone has been talking about, so with a big appetite I grabbed a friend and we headed down there. Since she is a smoker the hostess suggested that we sit at either the bar or in the ""lounge"". We opted for the later. The atmosphere was chill and the service always came with a smile. While I found the couches paired with extra small tables to be a bit awkward for eating, the food itself made up for any back pain that I may have suffered. Between my friend and I we basically ordered one of each from both the sushi and kitchen menu, and I can honestly say that I wasn't disappointed by any of it. We started with an enormous platter of sushi, my favorite being the roll that came wrapped in cucumber. For dinner we ordered the salmon and the filet. Both were absolutely amazing!!! Just when I thought that I couldn't eat another bite our waitress suggested the flourless chocolate cake for desert. How could I pass up chocolate? I couldn't. Thank god for my lack of willpower because I would have missed out on the perfect ending to an already unbelievable meal. Pros: amazing food, great service, cool decor, nice atmosphere Cons: small tables more

I love the atmosphere 12/7/2007

I went to Ronin recently on a Wednesday with a friend and I loved it! It kept me wanting more. Although the menu is simple there is great variety and many options for vegetarians. Our server was awesome, we weren't sure what to order and I was impressed with her suggestions of the Tuna Sliders and the Mountain Dew roll, both were delicious. They have these giant windows that open wide when the weather is nice, I can't wait for that! I would hang out there any day of the week. The cozy atmosphere and the unique music really topped off the experience. It is a refreshing option in Royal Oak. Pros: Great service, great food, open windows when it's warm more

Beautiful Ambiance!! 12/7/2007

I went to Ronin for the first time last night and LOVED IT! Arrived with a group of people and was told that there would be a short wait for the dining room. We decided to get a drink in the lounge, we liked the atmosphere of the lounge SO much, we decided to stay and eat. Beautiful, clean, comfortable set up....Restaraunt and lounge is decorated with natural materials like cedar wood, bamboo and soft candle light. Great place to go with a date or a group of friends. Sake is De-f-ing-licious! Multiple cold flavors and delightful warm sake as well, perfect for Michigans winter weather. Ronin is exactly what Royal Oak needed, a step up from the ""basement bars"" but not stuffy and pretensious like other neighboring bars and restaraunts. The sushi was the freshest I've had, better than our old Royal Oak favorite, and the kitchen food was dynOmitE! Ronin sliders, made with Kobe beef, melt in your mouth!! Great imported beer selection, including Japanese imports. Can't wait to go back and try there specialty cocktails!! Pros: great food, great atmosphere, great fun Cons: not open for lunch, no drink specials more

best sushi ever!! 12/5/2007

Came to have dinner and the place was very busy. There was a bit of a wait in the dining room but ended up sitting at the bar and ordered from there. The service was great! The fish is the freshest I have ever had. Also ordered the diver scallops from the kitchen menu and they were outstanding! I would highly suggest this restaurant to anyone! Pros: atmosphere Cons: winter... no open windows more

island of paradise in a sea of whatever. 12/5/2007

royal oak, michigan...known to a lot of locals as royal joke...has a real live gem that just popped up...raising up the bar on that classic detroit city status quo (READ: WHAT IS THE BARE MINIMUM OF QUALITY THAT WE NEED TO PROVIDE SO THAT PEOPLE WILL NOT START A RIOT?) ronin is on the corner of fourth + lafyette...just far enough from main street...this place is no joke !!! beacuase of work we are out that way often + it has become a steady eddy type jawn for us...you'll recognize kaku + crew from oslo downtown making next level sushi...only this time he is backed by an army of young + innovative chefs in the kitchen !!! ( READ: DO NOT SLEEP ON THE KITCHEN MENU.) for sushi check the specialty rolls...we love the kakucumber roll...you feel like you are on a faraway beach !!! THE TUNA TATAKI !!! SO REAL WITH IT !!! also some classics like the jalapeno roll...oh can't forget the spicy scallops...off the chain !!! from the kitchen check the diver scallops, the pork gyoza (WHEN YOU'VE HAD ONE TOO MANY), of course the kobe sliders, and our favorite the chicken teriyaki (THIS IS NO ORDINARY CHICKEN.) you can really stretch out + get comfortable + at the same time it is a very warm atmosphere...wood, carpet, candles...super chill...YOU HAVE TO SEE IT FOR YOURSELF !!! love it when we can belly up at the bar during the week so as to really silk it...grown + se*y on the weekends...grown + mellow during the week...YOU CAN'T GO WRONG !!! the clientele seems super ultra mixed...people are coming from the north, south, east, + west to check this top notch spot...foodies in the area...THIS IS YOUR OFFICIAL HEADS UP...bar life people...NOW YOU KNOW !!! Pros: super pro bar coupled with fine, fine dining. Cons: open at 5pm. more

Had a real cool time 12/2/2007

Went on a Monday and had a real cool time w/ a few people. Pros: Lighting, tunes, vice Cons: Long wait for a table on the weekends more

Rockin Sushi! 12/2/2007

Where do I begin... Ronin doubles as either the perfect date place or just somewhere laid-back to hang with friends. I can't tell which I like better: the food or the atmosphere? Everything is so reasonable (I secretly get carryout from there at least twice a week!) and the selections contain everything I'd expect as well as things I've never heard of or always wanted to try. The music selection and candlelit lighting make for a trendy yet romantic ambiance... And the smokin' staff is on top of their game! Definitely three thumbs up. more
