a nice find 6/16/2003

This is a great little restaurant that is tucked away from things - back in a neighborhood and easy to miss. A good variety of selections - we really enjoyed the food. Seating is at chairs or pillows on floor. The service is quite friendly and responsive. Coming from out of town, we were pleased to find a nice, cozy, out-of-the-way place with such good food. There are many dishes there that I'd like to try. I wish we had such a place closer to where we live! Pros: food, atmosphere, not crowded or trendy Cons: parking more

Trendy 1/8/2003

If you're looking for an authentic North African dining experience or real Asian cuisine, this is not the place for you. The dishes are quite innovative, however, and the setting quite nice (though the chairs and tables tend to be rather uncomfortable). If you're young, fun, and big on appearances, you should love this place. But if your more simple, like me, and care only about the quality and authenticity of the cuisine, well, you may want to try it anyway just for the experience. Pros: pretty, crowded, new-agey Cons: uncomfortable, slow, new-agey more

hurry up please 6/10 12/30/2002

Food quality is never an issue. The problem is you better hurry up. At 9:30 staff were sweeping up around our table, and we were told we couldn't order desert...the kitchen was closed. Didn't leave me with a warm and fuzzy feeling. Pros: food quality Cons: rushed service more

Another Rating... 11/21/2002

A very nice, intimate setting...quite small and nestled in the middle of the neighborhood, easy to miss just walking by. The food was excellent, and the prices quite reasonable more

  • The Scene
Alex Lee, one of the owners, built the tiny, 28-seat dining room, hand-coloring the walls and floor. In the front, there are tables close to the floor, with pillows on which to sit. Fortunately for most of us, there are regular tables in the rest of the space. The music is eclectic and never overpowering; service is efficient and informal.

    The Food
Lee's mother spent months experimenting with dishes from the different cuisines found on the spice-trade routes. For an appetizer, try the spiced corn pancakes topped with chili-lime yogurt. Due to the size of the kitchen, main dishes are mostly stews or salads. Those not to be missed include doro wat, an Ethiopian chicken curry and Malaysian nonya shrimp salad, which is tossed with starfruit, romaine and an amazing peanut-plum dressing. Go for Moroccan beef tangine, a stew flavored with onion, crimini mushrooms, tomato and cauliflower. And when you want to blow off some steam, get Malaysian devil's pork curry, spiced with onion, lemongrass, chilies, galangal and vinegar.
