this a great way to see what Alaska use to be like, from the Dog Mushing camp to the Native way of fishing. the only down side is its a bit pricey more

Fascinating Ride Down River 9/26/2008

We really enjoyed taking this excursion down the river and saw many beautiful and some very interesting homes on the shore along the way. We were thrilled with the stop at the Iditerod Champion's home and got to see all the dogs and talk to the husband and daughter. We also stopped at an Indian village on the way back and watched a sea plane taking off and landing. The boat was very comfortable, the crew members were very friendly and the weather was beautiful. When we go back to Alaska, we will take this cruise again. more

The Riverboat Discovery is a great way for tourists to see the area. They have a very long, exiting guided tour down the river. It is just beautiful. They have a number of stops along the way and there really is a lot to see. It is also a great thing to do for those who have lived here for a long time. PROS: Nice Tours CONS: more

The cruise on Riverboat Discovery is very informative and scenic. It is also a real bit of Alaska history, operated by the same family for several generations, since the early days of Fairbanks. Large groups are accomodated with ease, as are individual travelers. Staff are friendly and articulate, and demonstrations of native Athabascan crafts and history are truly authentic. A real find.   • Based in Fairbanks, Alaska, Riverboat Discovery offers cruise services, including tours on the Chena and Tanana rivers located in the mid Alaska region. It also provides visit to the kennels and various other locations. Founded in 1950, it operates a caf and gift shop. Steamboat Landing, its family-owned gift shop provides a wide variety of products, such as adult and children s clothing, collectible items, gold lockets and earrings, cookbooks, glasses, salad claws, books, CDs, photo albums, dog booties, beanies and smoked salmon. The company s caf offers homemade Alaskan ice cream, birch syrup popcorn, locally made mustard, syrups, jams and gourmet smoked salmon. It also offers complimentary coffee, bottled water and baked donuts to each customer with free ATM and shipping services..
