Disappointing 9/21/2010

We wanted to go to The Lady & Sons but it was packed. We still wanted seafood while in Savannah, so we picked the River House. I was not impressed. First of all, it's a royal pain in the butt to get there by car (we were there last Saturday, 9/18. I know, it was busy). I asked our waitress some questions about the menu that she was unable to answer, like what sauces were used with certain dishes. She also knew nothing about their wines and pairing. 1% tip deduction. I had their Crab Cake appetizer and it was very good. Unfortunately, our waitress brought it out right after our salads arrived. 1% tip deduction. I hate it when they don't space properly. The River House claims their house Caesar Salad is ""famous."" I've had better salads from Wendy's. For my entree, I had the Blackened Mahi Mahi and Georgia Shrimp, topped with Leeks, Mushrooms, Green Onions over Angel Hair Pasta with a Roasted Red Pepper Sauce. The serving was ample - a nice sized piece of fish and plenty of shrimp. (I would leave out the angel hair if I were preparing this dish - I stopped eating the pasta after a few bites and concentrated on the fish and veggies.) The Mahi and the shrimp were rather bland. I thought the Roasted Red Pepper Sauce would add some kick, but it was mostly pretty bland too. I tasted some spiceiness occasionally, but that was probably due to the sauce separating. My fellow diners had Early Bird Specials, one Fried Shrimp and the other had Chicken. They liked their meals, but without being mean, they're not really into fine dining. I'm a Winemaker and a Foodie. With the two Early Birds and a $5 off coupon, and only one glass of wine (kind of a short pour at that) and no other drinks except for water, our check came to $88. Next time I hope I get into Paula Deen's place and I'm also going to try the Wilkes House (it was recommended to me by a local). more

Not a Tourist Trap 11/4/2008

While the River House, located on River Street, does serve a bunch of tourists to Savannah, it's long history of solid, real seafood with southern style keeps it a favorite among locals, too. \r \r Flounder, Grouper, Shrimp, Oysters, salads, desserts to die for. Prices slightly tourist-y but not shocking. A good meal for a couple will be in the $50-65 range. \r \r Parking can be a problem, so I'd recommend a cab to and from where you are staying. Menus are posted at the entrance, and the service is friendly and efficient. You will not be disappointed, and if you are local, you will return with your out of town friends. more
