Editorial review from Citysearch 7/10/2012

I had many happy trips here with kids and grandkids, but the last trip ruined everything. My granddaughter picked up a rock off a pile by the store, and suddenly one of the owners was screaming at me (but at least not at the child). Even when I said I would weigh it and pay for it as soon as the store opened in the morning (since this was right after closing time), I got a 15-minute diatribe about people stealing from him. This is not a place to bring children unless you know they can behave perfectly and violate no rules (many of which they do not tell you). Otherwise, a great place for rockhounds. more

dont take kids 7/19/2011

i was excited about this trip. it was my families first time over here. I have 4 kids and the youngest is 12. i was not impressed with one of the owners. True, when you get there, there are a lot of rocks everywhere. All my kids were doing was looking down in the gravel road and occasionally pick a rock up. this older guy seemed ""kinda off"". He was an owner. He started yelling at my kids telling them to put the ""rocks"" down. They didnt have any rocks. And then he started ranting about how they were ""eyeballing him"" since they got there. WTF? The kids had come with me to do some rock hunting. Sure they were looking at the ground , but this guy was way beyond weird at the stuff he was saying to my kids. The rest of the staff was good. they do give you a map and go over some basic rules and stuff. they dont really show you how to get the eggs out or explain the harder areas on how to extract thunder eggs. So you will have to learn on your own. I asked a few people there while i was there and eventually i did a nice hall. I went on the 4th of July weekend. I ended up with several red and gold Moss agate thunder eggs. This is a good place to go if you keep it simple and go by yourself or with 1 more person. more

Rockhounders Delight 6/21/2011

Our visit to Richardsons Rock Ranch was the highlight of our short vacation trip. We didn't drive thousands of miles to get there but met people who did. We were given a detailed map on where to dig to our hearts content, the rules while being on the ranch, what to look for, and to go have fun. Please read their website for all rules they are very specific. The owners and staff were wonderful to work with. They had a nice PICNIC area to cool off after you finished digging. It was a great drive and the end result was fantastic! The 2009 negative review evidently did not read everything on their website. There is NO camping whatsoever on the property dry or otherwise. Around the office is not a place for your children to run free as there are numerous rock specimens and equipment to be injured on. I for one would not like to be cut by a piec of obsidian. Also inside the store and museum are not places for children to be left unsupervised. Overall this is a great place to take the family for a lot of fun playing in the dirt and finding beautiful thundereggs. We will be going back this summer and taking the kids with us this time :D As you can see from the pictures we found some beautiful thunder eggs. We came home with 33 pounds of thunder eggs and geodes we thinking we should have had more cut LOL more

Rude Staff, yell at Children 10/17/2009

Richardson's Rock Ranch was the worst experience vacationing we ever had. We drove 1000 miles to this key destination and left within 20 minutes disappointed and upset, because of the rudeness of the owners. We were aggressively reprimanded at the ""free"" dry camping area, due the owners insistence that were were incorrectly parked, despite no indication of a structured parking/camping system. (Just small grassy area, which by the way, children were not allowed to leave to explore the surrounding ranch area.) Better of seeking the free sites in the area. Go to the Chamber of Commerce and get the rockhounding map. Pros: lots of rocks Cons: rocks are imported, local thundereggs are not great more
