Emporia, Virginia is a nice, quiet respite off the White LIne Fever of I-95. If you are either northbound or southbound, it's convenietnly located right at the NC/VA border.
Prices are reasonable. The desk clerk on duty the night I stayed there was friendly, sharp and efficient. He directed me to a local market and the ever ubiquitous Wal-Mart.
The room was clean, appeared newly rennovated and had a mini-fridge and microwave. All on a coupon rate as well. Breakfast the next morning, though billed as Continental, included hot packaged oatmeal, coffee, juice, milk, cereal and fresh fruit. It was more than most offer. Magazines and newspapers were offered as well. The owner was there first thing in the morning.
Don't push into the "DC Zone" only to get ripped off with minimal service and high prices. Take it easy, step out of the fast lane and spend a night here.
If you are headed north and west towards I-81, stop here, then take the slower route up US 17 and enjoy the scenery, small towns and horse country as you make your way up towards I-66 and Front Royal.
