Generally we like to avoid chains, but they do come in handy when you are not feeling adventurous, or don’t have the ambition to seek out a new place. We used to eat occasionally at Red Robin in Maryland because it was right across the street from our office park. We were out shopping too long and needed a bite to eat, so we decided to grab a burger.
Burgers are what Red Robin is known for. They are on the expensive side, but they know how to cook them to the appropriate temperature, and have many combinations to choose from. They also do have other items on the menu, including salads and dinner combos.
I choose the mushroom burger. The burger was cooked to a perfect medium, which is so hard to find in restaurants. This is the burger for a mushroom lover. The layer of mushrooms was about as thick as the burger itself, which is perfect! The mushrooms were done just right, with no heavy butter or seasoning to take away from their flavor. Red Robin also has bottomless fries, and the seasoning they use is excellent!
My dining companion chose the 5 alarm burger which consists of jalapeno peppers, pepper jack cheese, salsa and Chipotle mayonnaise and you get to choose the degree of hot. Suffice it to say, he was sniffling good by the end of the burger, although it was stated it could ALWAYS be hotter.
My one complaint was the service. Somehow we got caught up in a break relief system and we were pretty much ignored after our food order was taken. No refills on our ice tea, nothing. This was one of the few times we tipped under 20%, which I hate doing. We waited for 15 minutes just to get our check, and it was actually dropped on the wrong table. We had to ask our fellow diners for our check. While we don’t require white glove service, complete indifference isn’t what brings us back.
While we found the burgers to be delicious, even for the somewhat inflated price, this is a chain. Coupled with bad service, it won’t be our first choice for food in the future.
