Nice meal, nice price 2/15/2012

After several visits to Cloudcroft, we finally decided to wait around for lunch hour (restaurant opens for lunch at 11:30am). The menu was small, but quaint. We had the chicken and chile stuffed fried avocado and the monte cristo sandwich. Both meals were very good and decently priced. Another reviewer refers to ""frozen crinkle cut fries"". When we visited, the fries were not ""crinkle cut"", but ""waffle cut"". I do not know that they were frozen. Actually, they seemed too thin to have ever have been frozen (thinner fries would fall apart in a frozen state). The stuffed avocado came with beans and rice pilaf (possibly the best rice pilaf I've had, as most are overdone and too aromatic). The monte cristo came with sweet strawberry au jus, and the waffle cut fries - which tasted like waffles dipped in the au jus. My only issue with the stuffed avocado was that it could have been better with grilled chicken and perhaps an addition of bacon. Then my review would have been 5 stars instead of 4. The wait staff was very pleasant (if not forcibly so), and prices very reasonable. A nice day out! more

Small Town, Big City Food 8/31/2010

We honeymooned here some years ago, and returned this month for lunch while passing through New Mexico. The food did not disappoint. My husband had the Chile Relleno since it was peak NM chile season and they were the best he's had, he declared. Two NM chiles, stuffed with white cheese, rolled in toasted blue cornmeal and served over a bed of half pinto beans and half hominy, it made a pretty dish, and I have attempted to add a picture here as proof. I was craving a burger and asked for their ""old fashioned"" served medium (it said ""grilled to order!""). I was pleasantly surprised to see they complied with my wish and the burger was juicy and delicious resting on a sourdough bun with lettuce, tomato and red onion on the side. The fries were crinkle cut frozen, but the burger was my focus and was really an excellent burger. A nice cold bottle of chardonnay and a pleasant staff rounded our visit. We never saw the unfortunate Rebecca, the ghost who reportedly resides in the 100+ year old hotel, but hopefully we will return sometime. If we do, I hope they've taken those horrid gas logs out of the magnificent lobby fireplace and returned the real wood fire. more
