I brought my car in to have the brake pads replaced and rotors turned and was given an estimate ""if nothing else is needed to be done"". I thought the price quoted was kind of high but I really didn't feel like doing the job myself and left the car with them. About 45 minutes later I received a call stating that the rotors could not be turned because they were old and turning them would take them 'below specs' and would have to be replaced (an age old mechanic trick to boost costs/profits). I was given another ridiculously high quote and told them 'no thanks'. The guy on the phone huffed and puffed a bit acting upset that I didn't want to pay his inflated price.
When I got the car home and completed the job myself for less than $40.00 (with higher end brake pads and turning the rotors), I found that the mechanic who inspected my brakes cross threaded one lug nut on each of the wheels requiring those lug bolts to be replaced. Strangely enough, each of the lug bolts were centered on the caliper and can't be replaced without removing the caliper again (a lot of extra work). Spiteful mechanic? I don't know but they don't get another chance with any of my vehicles.
