Filet and Walleye filet disappointing, service average 1/30/2007

My first experience with Axel's came at the Tavern in Loretto.and it was disappointing. The place had a saloon/dance hall sort of decor, loud and gaudy with a weird white tile floor but that would have been O K had the steak been great. Unfortunately it wasn't. I ordered the Land and Lake which was an 8 ounce filet cooked rare and a pan fried walleye filet. The filet was dry and mealy and didn't generate one drop of juice. The texture of this steak didn't lend itself to a rare presentation. Now I know that a filet is not the juiciest cut, but really. Maybe I should have tried the Porterhouse at $38, nah. The walleye was a perfect cut with a nice thin breading but it was sitting around for several minutes after it was cooked and/or not fried in a hot enough pan. It came out cool and the breading was not even near crispy. So much for their specialty. Although this wasn't a cheap plate, $32.50, I guess you get what you pay for. Next time I'm looking for a great steak in the western burbs, I'll pay the ten dollars extra per plate and try the steaks at Gianni's Steakhouse in Wayzata.\r \r For the record, this is the same basic menu as the other Axels. Pros: Not much to distinguish this as an upscale menu Cons: disappointing steaks for the price, food preparation wanting more

Terrible Service; Worse food 10/31/2006

When entering the restaurant we were greeted by a very friendly host, but our server and her trainee could not care less about us. A runner brought out our food which I was very concerned about. I had ordered the scallops and shrimp and it came out in a disgusting bowl with mashed potatoes and a gravy all mixed together with a few bits of seafood. What a horrible combination. My guests' ribeye was served cold as well as his beans, but no one ever came back to check on our meal. Not a great way to train a new employee. We were very disappointed to have to pay 90 dollars for such a horrible meal and worse service. more

I recently has another great experience at Axel's. They have great food and the drink specials are awesome. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone searching for a great date spot or dinner with the family. Enjoy! Pros: Service, Food, Drinks more

Yummy 8/24/2005

What a find - I had lunch here and I will return to have dinner or the Sunday brunch. I was very impressed with Axel's hidden in the Radisson Hotel in Roseville. The food was absolutely fabulous!! A little pricy but you are getting quality beyond compare. I have spent more other places and been very disappointed. I have driven by there on the weekends it looks pretty quite then - but lunch was busy. Pros: Food, Quality Cons: Small, Little Spendy more

A surprise of a restaurant hidden in Roseville 3/2/2005

I had lunch at Axel's, having never eaten there previously, and was pleasantly surprised by the menu choices and accompanying prices. I was promptly greeted, despite a line of people, and seated as soon as a table opened. The waitstaff was polite, made recommendations, and deferred interrupting conversations. Choosing a dish was hard considering the menu choices. The food was delivered fairly quickly, very fresh, and tasted wonderful. The ambience was a variant of the hotel beige with spots of color from pictures and decorations. But, in all, a delightful above average restaurant hidden in Roseville. Pros: Price/Value, Parking/Location, Menu Choices Cons: Ambience more

Chip off the old block 2/18/2003

Axel's in Roseville was just as pleasing as the location in Mendota. My husband and I live in Arden Hills and always went to Mendota. We decided to try Roseville because it was closer to home. Don't be mad Linda, but we fell in love with Roseville. We will still visit Mendota, but Roseville's staff was so friendly and made us feel special. So now we can save a few miles and still be happy!!!!! Thanks for thinking of the north metro. Pros: friendly staff Cons: parking more

Class and Chow 2/3/2003

Axel's is a great place to bring your date - they give out lovely gifts and flowers to the ladies on special occasions when they walk in - lots of style! more

steak-yes; pasta-no 1/30/2003

We have dined at 2 locations, and always enjoy the steaks and fish, but they might want to take their pasta off the menu, as it just isn't good! more

""I shall return"" 12/18/2002

Four people dined on a recent thursday evening. Server was very good (thanks Mary Ellen) and they write upside down! Small Prime Rib was large and great, Seafood, chicken pasta were very good. Four out of four were pleased. Yes big food but good food. Pros: service, food, parking Cons: atmosphere? more

Not worth it 10/30/2002

My husband and I took a dear friend her for a celebration dinner. We spent a lot of money for a very special occasion and wanted to be treated well...and we were sadly dissappointed. The food was good, not super, but good. Our waitress was a snot. She wasn't friendly, we had to ask her for the dessert tray, we tried to order port just to find out (30 minutes later) they were out of the good stuff. Also, there's not a good seperation b/n smoking and non-smoking. We sat on the end of the non-smoking section and by the end of the night I felt like I had smoked three cigarettes. We won't be going back, it's not worth it. Pros: location, parking Cons: too expensive, rude more

Hidden Jewel 10/14/2002

My wife and I went to Axel's for our 10th anniversary and we had a great time. The walleye was fantastic and my porterhouse was huge! The server knew we were out for a special occasion and she made it feel that way! We'll see ya soon. Pros: good food, good service Cons: parking more

big food, bad food 9/27/2002

We ate at Axel's in Roseville on 9/18/02 for the first and last time. In order to compensate for the bland, poor quality food Axel's serves huge portions. My girlfriend ordered the salmon and received half a fish that smelled past its prime. My prime rib lacked flavor and was cold. Two people by us complained about the number of bones in their walleye and that their cheese cake was still frozen. Our cheese cake was also huge and tasteless - not to mention took 20 minutes to get. The meal, with one drink and tip cost $64. For that money I'd go to a real restaurant like Palomino. more

A perfect ""10"" 7/19/2002

This is the best of the three Axels'. Our server Ellen was excellent. She was very attentive and made our lunch very plesant. I am so glad to have an Axel's servicing the North Metro Area. Thank you and keep up the good work. :) Pros: Free Parking, Reservations, Coat Room more
