The real Oakland 12/9/2008

Bartenders are your friends. Especially these. Its a great after work joint or a quick pre - out spot to meet before you go for something else. The bartenders are part of a wider scene in Oakland night life and will know the pulse of the city. Pros: brotenders Cons: bros more

I lub it! 12/8/2008

Best place for drinking jack and cokes in oakland. We used to stumble in there after 16 hour coding days to lots of drunk tribune workers and cheap drinks. Pros: Best Bar grimy. Cons: Joel doesn't work there anymore more

radio rock 4/14/2006

Looking for a good drink and a chance to listen to the dj voted best in the east bay, with the best music coming on after 10:30. Went on my own and enjoyed a good night, even ordered a second drink ($3-4 gin and tonic that night) to listen to more of the music. A little smokey, but not too bad. Even the asian influenced interior wasn't too gaudy. Laid back groups mostly. Key lime drink is good as stated. More eye candy for the straight men than the women from the bartenders. Pros: drinks, music, laid back atmosphere Cons: smoke, small more

its gotten better 4/10/2005

I noticed that this has not been updated in a while and wanted to make note that the Radio is one of the finest bars I have been to. They have come into their own in the Oakland bar scene. Weekends are the best time to go if you want a crowd and the best DJs. They even have the DJ that was voted East Bay's finest two years in a row there on Saturday now, DJ Joe Quixx. I would suggest this bar to anyone that wanted to go out for any kind of good time. more

what's all the hype? 2/3/2003

I have lived in Oakland for three years (moved up from LA) and could not agree more that Oakland needs a couple of quality bars, but to hype one up (assuming that the bar owners are not posting all of these ratings) is misleading. I have frequented this establishment at least 15 times with the hopes of it being better than the last time but I leave discouraged every time. It has potential, but I think the owner(s) need to put in a little more effort. I love Oakland so I am keeping my fingers crossed. more

I went here on thurs. and fri. nights a month ago. It was easy to get seats at either the bar or tables. I thought Radio's red lighting wasn't as annoying as it might sound and the music was varied and although turned up, not too loud. The bartender was down to earth and appreciative of all tips he recieved which i find to be rare. I look at Radio as being a good place to stop for an hour or so but not a place to settle in for the night. Beer selection was low end but priced accordingly. The Mixed drinks were strong. Radio bar's crowd seems mostly in their twenties, diverse and friendly with an urban feel. I'll be there again soon. My score may seem low but average for me is a 5. Pros: Service, Parking, NIGHTLIFE in downtown Cons: Isolated in evening, nightlife in DOWNTOWN more

Not all that great 11/20/2002

Went on a Wed night not all that great. Service was good because no one was there. Was hoping for at least a few girls; not to many tonight but I will definitely try one more time. more

Wow 8/17/2002

Went here recently for a girls' night out, and it was just what we wanted. Great atmosphere with the red-and-black decor, gorgeous bartender, and yummy drinks---the Key Lime Pie is a must! more

  • The Scene
This self-consciously hip but unpretentious bar is a cool place to grab a drink on a dark night in the ghost town of downtown Oakland. Glowing with the red walls and paper lanterns of a Chinatown brothel, it features DJs who blend an eclectic range of music--much like you would find scanning along a radio dial. With a high ceiling and an upper-level DJ booth, there's an airy feel to the place that's otherwise hard to find in a town filled with dive bars.

    The Draw
Try one of Radio's kooky signature cocktails, Key Lime Pie (a mixture of Stoli Vanil, Malibu rum, lime juice, and 7UP). The crowd is mellow, but notably more fashion-conscious than at the nearby Ruby Room, the other primo Oaktown hangout.
